Bertha Griebenow Schatz was born on March 11, 1866, in Germany and died at her home in West Union, Saturday evening, Sept 5, at the age of 76 years. She was stricken around 4 o'clock Saturday afternoon and lingered for just a few hours. Mrs. Schatz was the daughter of August and Willmene Griebenow, one of six children, two sisters, Mrs. Augusta Wisher and Mrs. Amelia Lubke preceding her in death. At the age of four years she was taken ill with scarlet fever which left her deaf and with this affliction she was educated in her girlhood years in needlework and handicraft in German schools. She was baptized and confirmed in the German Lutheran faith in her childhood. She came to America with her parents and brothers and sisters when a young woman. In 1899 she was united in marriage to Erhardt Schatz, West Union, who died in 1910 and from that time on she carried on alone in caring for her family, losing one son, Arthur, in 1916. She leaves to mourn her passing, two brothers, Herman Griebenow, Hawkeye, and Ferdinand Griebenow, Milwaukee; one sister, Mrs. Ulnka Burrow, Clermont; her two sons, Herman and Mark; two grandsons, Richard and Leo Griebenow; one granddaughter, Twyla Rae Schatz, and one great-1 grandson, Dennis Lee Griebenow,' and several nieces and nephews.
