In 1918, E. Clay Timanus was President of Tri-State Collieries Company, 904 American Building, Baltimore, miners and shippers of High Grade Bituminus Coal from Garrett Slope Mines in Garrett, PA and Fort Hill Mines, PA. He lived at 2223 Maryland Avenue--the Timanus mansion, former home of Baltimore mayor E. Clay Timanus Edwin Clay Timanus, a republican party member, 1904 was elected President of the Baltimore City Council and succeeded to Mayor after the death of Robert Milligan McLane, who was elected Mayor in 1903 over Frank C. Wachter, after a bitter campaign. He served as ex officio member of the Burnt District Commission. Mayor Timanus inaugurated, with a number of the most progress and influential men of the city, a movement to undertake a series of costly, but needed civic improvements including a modern system of sewers, replacing cobblestone roads, paving new roads north and west in the "Annexed" area, new schools, fire stations, parks, and increased water supply, a Union railroad terminal, etc.
