Bertha also had 8 half-siblings from her father's first marriage to Euphemia Heaton who died in 1860.
Bertha's parents were married in 1862 in Bureau County, Illinois, and her 4 oldest siblings were born in that location. Her parents moved to Sullivan County, Missouri, between 1874 and 1878. Bertha and her brother William were born in Missouri.
1880 Census of Jackson Township, Sullivan County, Missouri:
Lewis Dennis 60, farmer Lucy Dennis 39, wife Ira Dennis 30 (Lewis' son by 1st wife) Alice Dennis 17 Robert Dennis 11 Charles Dennis 9 Chester Dennis 7 William Dennis 2 Burr Dennis 29, farm hand, no relation
Bertha was born after this census in 1881.
Bertha's father, Lewis Dennis, died sometime after the 1880 census and before February 1896 when her mother Lucy remarried to George Varvil in the town of Elmer, Macon County, Missouri. It is unknown whether the family moved to Macon County before or after Lewis Dennis died.
Bertha married George William Todd in Elmer, Macon County, Missouri, on March 8, 1896. Because of Bertha's young age, her mother Lucy E. Varvil gave consent to the marriage.
Bertha and George had three children:
1. Lucy E. Todd 1896-1918 (named for her maternal grandmother) 2. Jessie M. (Todd) Overcast 1898-1976 (named for her paternal grandfather) 3. Henry Todd ?-1908
George William Todd had been blind since the age of 21. He had a difficult time making a living for his family. After he and Bertha were married, they lived with George's widowed father Jessie Todd in Elmer, Macon County, Missouri.
1900 census of Walnut Township, Macon County, Missouri:
Jessie G. Todd 60, farmer (father of George Todd) George Todd 28, broom maker Bertha Todd 19 Lucy E. Todd 3 Jessie Todd 1 In this census, son Henry was not yet born, but I am not sure of his birth year, but Henry died in about 1908. Then the family moved to Oregon County, Missouri, in about 1909. They were listed in the May 1910 census in that county. Bertha died that same year.
Jessie, the only child to survive and get married, said her sister Lucy died when she, Jessie, was age 20. Jessie married William Overcast and they lived in Montana where Jessie died and is buried.
