Such is the brief record of one of the sweetest lives that ever was lived. Bertha Flick was known and loved among the people of Brown County some eight or ten years ago as a very successful teacher. She had come here from her home in York County to visit a sister, Mrs. Nettie Flick Hitchcock and while on that visit had been persuaded to teach a term of school. Her success gained her a reputation and she was in demand. While thus engaged, teaching a school near Ainsworth, she met Dr. G. O. and Mrs. Remy who like all others learned to love her most dearly. Later, their son Charles, then a traveling man, came home on a visit and in due time the happy announcement of their engagement was made to the two families. Later, when it was determined that Charles should study medicine, Bertha went to Omaha where she entered the Presbyterian Hospital as a student in nursing in order that she might be the more closely in touch with her future husband and his life work. On June 6, 1906, at the home of her mother in York, she was married to Charles E. Remy, then a student in medicine in the medical department of the state university. After his graduation in 1910, they moved to Omaha where the young doctor and his wife entered upon the work of their chosen profession—he in the office of Dr. C. C. Allison. On March 7, 1908, their home was blest by the arrival of a sweet little baby daughter that was named Claudia. Some time during the winter of 1911-1912 Bertha began suffering severely from an attack of appendicitis. She went from her home in Omaha to that of her husband's father, Dr. G. O. Remy in Ainsworth for rest and recuperation before an operation should be performed. Some six weeks before her death, she returned to Omaha to be taken almost immediately to St. Catherine's Hospital where she was under the skillful treatment of Drs. Drummer and Allison. She had not sufficient strength at that time to endure the operation and an attempt was made to build up her system to that end. In the meantime the poison from the inflamed appendix had escaped causing great suffering and making the hope of recovery more doubtful. Thus she continued to suffer until the early hours of May 31, when the Death Angel came and carried her away. The remains were brought to Ainsworth where on Sunday afternoon amidst a large company of sorrowing relatives and friends, they were laid to rest in the beautiful Ainsworth Cemetery. The funeral services were held from the residence of Dr. G. O. and Mrs. Remy and were conducted by Rev. W. J. Brient of the M. E. Church. A choir made up of her personal friends sang the sweet songs that she had so loved in her life. The pallbearers were personal friends of both herself and her husband. The casket was almost buried in a bower of beautiful flowers, the love tokens of many dear friends. Those attending the funeral services from out of town were her mother, Mrs. Flick of York, her brother, Lorin Flick of Whitman, Nebraska, Mrs. Beth Flick Slocum of Raven, Nebraska, and Dr. and Mrs. Farquhar of Bassett, Nebraska. Besides the husband and little daughter, she leaves to mourn her loss her mother, Mrs. Flick of York; her sister, Mrs. Nettie Flick Hitchcock of Midvale, Nebraska; her sister, Mrs. Verna Flick Wheeler of York; a brother, Charles Flick who lives on the old home place in York County; Lorin Flick of Whitman Nebraska; and Mrs. Beth Flick Slocum of Raven, Nebraska, besides her husband's people to whom she was as dear as if she had been a blood relation and hundreds of friends in Brown County and Omaha and York.
