Bertha Lee, known as Bertie to her friends and family, was born on August 18, 1928, in Washington, D.C. to Bertha Lee Logan Fleet and Robert Lee Fleet. A few years later her family purchased a farm and relocated to Lothian, Maryland. The new life required both commitment to hard physical labor and a strong determination to succeed while creating an amazingly strong family bond. Bertie soon learned the value of hard work and the ability to sacrifice in order to accomplish a greater goal. The importance of family and friends was also an enduring belief well learned as she saw her parents, having four children of their own, while living in only a two room farm house, take in four neighborhood children whose parents were in need. Bertie later joked to her children that it wasn't until she went away to college that she was able to sleep long ways in the bed because some other child was often in need of a place to stay. Countless neighbors have told stories of how their families were helped by the generosity of the Fleet family. Bertie spent her formative years in southern Maryland attending Owensville Grammar and later Southern High School where she achieved not only academic excellence but also actively participated in softball, field ball, the glee club, and was voted Vice-President of the Senior class. She was described by a classmate as one who is "always so full of life" and a charming person who "always has a smile for everyone". Upon graduation from high school in 1945, Bertie, matriculated to the University of Maryland where she became an active member of the Beta Eta chapter of the Alpha Xi Delta Fraternity. She quickly caught the eye of a dashing young athlete named Robert Strange, who would later become her husband. Robert, known as Bob, transitioned into the Air Force, and Bertie finished her education, receiving a Bachelor’s degree from the college of Home Economics in 1949. Bertie and Bob were married in 1950, and moved to Texas to begin their great adventure together. Within the first fifteen years the family relocated at least eight times from Texas to Georgia, Alabama, South Carolina, Mississippi, Alaska, and eventually Germany. The adventure provided the family an amazing opportunity to see beautiful places, create special memories, and develop tremendous lifelong friendships that endured throughout their lives. Bertie also quickly acquired the organizational skills to keep a blossoming household well organized and humming even while raising three boys and a girl. In 1965, the family settled in Annapolis, Maryland where she created a warm and inviting home in which family was nurtured and friends were welcome. The house always seemed to sing with laughter and conversation among good friends joined together for one of her delicious meals or wonderful parties. Somehow she also managed to find the time to become active in several community organizations such as the Boy and Girl Scouts of America, Red Cross, YWCA, Parent-Teacher Organizations, and Civitans where she tirelessly worked fund raisers and served on several committees. After the children were older she obtained employment as a proofreader reader for the Maryland State Legislature where she remained for the next twelve years and developed amazing friendships that lasted throughout her life. While in Annapolis, the family purchased a sailboat and shared in Bob's passion for sailing. The boys would join him in the thrill of racing while Bertie and their daughter would join for more leisurely cruising up and down the Chesapeake. As members of the Alberg 30 Association they again formed lasting friendships and continued to develop their love of sailing. Bob and Bertie took several longer voyages together including a journey up the IntraCoastal Waterway to Nova Scotia and an adventurous trip to the Bahamas and throughout several islands of the Caribbean. In 1999, Bertie and Bob moved to the Northern Neck of Weems, Virginia to pursue their love of sailing and travel. The couple also continued their community service through several local organizations such as the Northern Neck Rose Society, Historic Christ Church, the Reedville Fisherman's Museum, and St. Stephen's Anglican/ Light of Christ Church in Heathsville, where she was able to utilize her passion of gardening through the annual plant sale. Bertie was preceded in death by her husband Robert, but is survived by their children Robert Edward Strange and his wife Millie, Bruce Logan Strange and his wife Brenda, Russell Scott Strange, and Susan Lee Krieger and her husband Stan. She also leaves behind seven grandchildren, eleven great-grandchildren, eight great-great grandchildren, and her faithful dog, George II. Bertha Lee Strange was a woman of tremendous strength and character who dedicated her life to her family and friends. As a woman of faith, Bertie patterned her life by the quote from St. Francis of Assisi-"God grant me the strength to accept things I cannot change, change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference". As a wife, mother, and friend, Bertie made a difference in the lives of those who were fortunate to know her. Her children were blessed by a mother who not only taught the important lessons in life but also lived them every day. Services celebrating her life will be held at 2:00 Friday, July 10th at Historic Christ Church in Weems, Virginia.
