Funeral services were held at Huron Saturday and the body brought to Brookings where services were held at the Bartling Funeral Home at 1:30 Sunday afternoon, conducted by Rev. O.D. Jackson. Burial was made in Greenwood Cemetery beside her son. Bertha Downing was born at Cherokee, Iowa, September 1, 1880. She married Edwin Tifft July 27, 1897, and for several years thereafter made her home at Anthon. After Mr. Tifft's death she moved with her family to Brookings and for a number of years was clerk in Grimm's and also in the Hauff store. She was the mother of three children, one son and two daughters, Neal who was accidentally killed in 1919 while a fireman on the Northwestern Railroad, Mrs. Ernest (Ella) Telkamp and Mrs. Albert (Thelma) Telkamp, both of near Brookings. Mrs. Tifft married Manual Reintsma of Huron on January 23, 1928, and became a real mother to his three children, Manual, Charles and Verna, 13. Besides the husband and children she is survived by four grandchildren, two brothers, C.E. Downey and M.L. Downey of Moville, and three sisters, Mrs. L.E. Bacon of Aurora, Mrs. Arthur Hanson of Minneapolis, and Mrs. C.N. Dial of Eden Prairie, Minnesota, who were at her bedside and at the funeral. Ten members of the Railway organization of Lady Firemen of Huron participated in the services at the grave. SUBMITTER'S NOTE: The last name of her brothers is: DOWNING - not Downey.
