Description	:	WHITE PLAINS - Mrs. Bertha Marshall Nichols, the wife of the late Mr. Merlin M. Nichols passed away Feb. 4, 2003, at Twelve Oaks Retirement Home. Mrs. Nichols was born in Surry County Feb. 2, 1913, to Samuel D. and Hattie Jenkins Marshall. She was an exceptionally loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She was a lifelong member of White Plains Friends Meeting, being a great-granddaughter of Vestal Hutchens, founder of the meeting, where she participated in the Friends Women's Society and was recognized with a lifetime membership in the United Society of Friends Women. She was a Sunday school teacher,... Read More	WHITE PLAINS - Mrs. Bertha Marshall Nichols, the wife of the late Mr. Merlin M. Nichols passed away Feb. 4, 2003, at Twelve Oaks Retirement Home. Mrs. Nichols was born in Surry County Feb. 2, 1913, to Samuel D. and Hattie Jenkins Marshall. She was an exceptionally loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She was a lifelong member of White Plains Friends Meeting, being a great-granddaughter of Vestal Hutchens, founder of the meeting, where she participated in the Friends Women's Society and was recognized with a lifetime membership in the United Society of Friends Women. She was a Sunday school teacher, participant in community activities and a member of the Surry Quilters Guild. Through the years she honored each child, grandchild and great-grandchild with their own quilt. She was greatly beloved and will be greatly missed. Surviving are four daughters and three sons-in-law, Ruth and Swanson Richards of Mount Airy, Merle and Ronald Tedder of Lewisville, Nancy Nichols Dawson of Mount Airy and Penny and Gary Chilton of Rural Hall; a son and daughter-in-law, Warren C. and Janet Nichols of Mount Airy; grandchildren Anne Richards Hennis and husband Jeffery, Charlie Merlin Nichols, Stuart Marshall and Jennifer Nichols, Richard Grant and Robin Puckett, Christy Lynn Dawson, Janet Leigh Nichols, Olivia Dawson Vaught and husband Peyton, Gari Leigh Chilton, Jodi Chilton Cottone and husband Mark, April Tedder Lancaster and husband Larry and Anna Tedder Stover and husband Chris; and great-grandchildren Samuel Austin Nichols, Emily Pearson, Weldon Rose Nichols, Jessica Bean Nichols, Brady Lynn Vaught, Alexander Grant Puckett, Aliza Nichole Puckett, Madison Sinclair Lancaster and Lawrence Mitchell Lancaster. The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 6, 2003, at White Plains Friends Meeting, conducted by the Rev. Wayne Johnson. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church and will receive friends after the service in the fellowship hall. The family may also be contacted at the home of Warren Nichols. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to White Plains Friends Meeting, P.O. Box 3, White Plains, NC 27031.
