BERTHA WOLFINGER Bertha Sherod, daughter of Joseph and Ellen Montgomery Sherod, was born in Wayne county, Iowa, September 8, 1871 and passed away at the Corydon hospital Saturday, October 28, 1950, at the age of 79 years, one month and 20 days. On September 27, 1889, she was united in marriage to Philip Monroe Wolfinger. To this union five children were born, all of whom survive her. They are: Mrs. Margaret Kendall, of Chariton; Mrs. Icel Dorsey, of San Diego, Calif.; Clarence Wolfinger, of Rock Island, Ill.; Millard and Doyle Wolfinger, of Davenport. She is also survived by seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren, two sisters, Mrs. Kate Powell, of Humeston and Mrs. Winnie Kelley, of Corydon and a number of other relatives and many friends. She was preceded in death by her husband on Feb. 19, 1939, two sisters, Ellen, who died in infancy, Jessie Wolfinger, and one brother, Ray Sherod. In her early youth she accepted Christ as her Saviour and she and Mr. Wolfinger were charter members of the Bethel church, which they helped to build near their farm home. Later, she was for many years a member of the Promise City Methodist church and at the time of her death was a member of the Corydon Methodist church. In the year 1921 the Wolfinger's moved to Corydon where she spent the remainder of her life. In failing health since May, 1947, she became bedfast in May, 1949, and had been a patient in the Corydon hospital since January of this year. She was always cheerful and ever ready to lend a helping hand, bearing her burdens with a smile and extending sympathy to others in times of need or sorrow. She was a good neighbor, a real friend, a wonderful wife and mother. During her long illness she was a very kind and patient sufferer. Services, conducted by the Rev. Mr. Wyatt, were held at the Wolf funeral home in Corydon Monday, Oct. 30, at 10 a.m. Burial was made in the New York cemetery. Mrs. Rolla Allred was pianist and Mr. Allen Winger was solist. Casket bearers were Marion Whitlock, Clyde Blevins, Dewey Smith, Fred Johnson, Josh Morris and Arthur Thomas.
