She was born Oct. 20, 1917, in Milton, WV, daughter of the late John Sherman and Lula Parrish Lawhorn. She was also preceded in death by a grandson, Andrew Brian Blake; a great grandson, Jackson Blake Russell; her sisters, Elizabeth L. Crookshanks, Aileen L. Jordan and Eloise L. Braley; her brothers, Prentice, Elwood and John Lawhorn. Maxine graduated from Milton High School in 1936, where she was a tennis champion and excelled in other sports. She married her high school sweetheart in 1939, while he was in college. While she had no desire to go to college, she did write all of Frank's college term papers. She felt her 'calling' was to care for Frank, their church members and especially their two children. She was an expert tailor and seamstress, designing many wedding gowns and attendant gowns. When serving a charge in Burkeville, Va., she attended Longwood College in Farmville, taking courses in interior design, which later directed her toward her dream of owning her own gift store, Maxine's Gift & Jewelry Shoppe. For 33 years, she catered to the many brides who selected their china, silver and crystal from her shoppe, which fulfilled her love to "play with lovely things." Many of her customers and brides became lifelong friends. She loved to entertain. Until recent months, she baked cakes and prepared homemade candies for friends, and especially for those who lived alone, always wanting to put a smile on a lonely face. Ever the prankster, one never knew who would be the recipient of her next foolishness. She was famous for saying "you don't quit having fun because you grow old, you grow old because you quit having fun." Her favorite holiday was Christmas and she loved to don her Santa outfit to visit nursing homes with gifts for both patients and staff. Maxine was a member of Drummondtown United Methodist Church since 1950. Survivors include her son, Frank W. Blake II (Judi); her daughter, Betsye B. Russell (John); grandchildren, Frank W. "Bill" Blake III (Michelle), J. Warren Blake (Tracy), Ann Blake Holmes (Monty), Hunter B. Blake, Heather Wood Blake, J. Kenneth Russell II (Carla), and Kevin B. Russell (Ashley); great grandchildren, Sara and Savannah Blake, Amanda Denton, Camden, Merritt, Madison and Morgan Russell and Olivia and Andrew Holmes; sister-in-law, Eleanor Lawhorn; many nieces and nephews. Funeral service at Drummondtown United Methodist Church, with burial at Edgehill Cemetery in Accomac, VA with Reverends Betty Marshall, Phillip Godwin and Brian Kramer officiating.
