She was born on February 21, 1904, in Liberty, N.C. to William Joseph (Ben) and Nona Augusta (Gussie) Butler. She was born on February 21, 1904, in Liberty, N.C. to William Joseph (Ben) and Nona Augusta (Gussie) Butler. Mrs. Johnson attended Guilford College and, at one time, taught in a one-room school house in Randolph County. In 1930, she married James Pope Johnson of Madison, N.C. The two were partners in life and their handcrafted furniture business, The Chelsea Workshop, for 60 years. They lived in Greensboro and Hampton, Va. and then Madison, N.C. where they moved in 1945. In 1962, at the respective ages of 65 and 59, Mr. and Mrs. Johnson personally constructed their own home. After Mr. Johnson' s death in 1990, Mrs. Johnson continued to live in Madison until 1996, when she moved to Forsythe County, residing first at Independence Village, then The Elms and later Arbor Acres. She was a lifelong, creative hobbyist enjoying writing, painting, drawing, hand stitchery, sewing, collecting, flower arranging, bird watching, reading and creating pressed flower pictures. Her wild flower garden, renowned throughout Rockingham County, was featured in various local newspapers. Mrs. Johnson was active in her community throughout her life. At age 86 she began volunteering for Meals on Wheels, often serving people far younger than she was. She loved interacting with people, and until she moved from Madison, often shared her home with her many friends by hosting frequent "tea parties" and meetings of her prayer group, garden club and book club. Mrs. Johnson was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, and 11 brothers and sisters. She is survived by her daughters, Elizabeth (David) Reid, Ann (Horace) Willson, and Ruth Haggerty; six grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. Visitation will be held at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday, April 12, at the Vogler & Sons Chapel at 2849 Middlebrook Drive, Clemmons, NC 27012, (336) 766-4714. A funeral service at the same location will immediately follow at noon. Interment will be at a later date.
