Description	:	Bessie Ellen Miller, 89, a native of Dunlap, KS, died on Thanksgiving morning, Nov. 28, 2013, at her nephew Lyn Scott's home in Berkeley, CA. Miss Miller was born in Dunlap on Sunday, Feb. 24, 1924. She was the youngest daughter of the late Benjamin Arthur and Samantha Miller who had moved from the Appalachian Mountains of North Carolina to the Flint Hills of Kansas in the early 1900's. Read More	Bessie Ellen Miller, 89, a native of Dunlap, KS, died on Thanksgiving morning, Nov. 28, 2013, at her nephew Lyn Scott's home in Berkeley, CA. Miss Miller was born in Dunlap on Sunday, Feb. 24, 1924. She was the youngest daughter of the late Benjamin Arthur and Samantha Miller who had moved from the Appalachian Mountains of North Carolina to the Flint Hills of Kansas in the early 1900's. Miss Miller graduated from Dunlap High School in May 1942. She grew up with her parents, 12 siblings, and Uncle Milt Miller during the Great Depression and the Dust Bowl years. The Pearl Harbor attack happened during her senior year in high school, and she saw her brothers enter all branches of the military. She went to work at the local county courthouse and began her 35-year career of government service. During and after World War II she worked in government offices in Council Grove, Ness City and Wakeney. In the 1950's she moved to Washington, D. C. to live with her sister, Lola Jane Bare and went to work for the federal government at the Department of Interior. In 1957, a second cousin suggested that she work overseas. Her first foreign assignment was at the U.S. Embassy in Phnom Penh, Cambodia, working for the U.S. Agency for International Development. In the next 20 years she would live in Saigon, Vietnam; Vientiane, Laos; Tunis, Tunisia; Seoul, Korea; Taipei, Taiwan; Bangkok, Thailand; and finally in Manila in the Philippines. Travel was her hobby and she visited friends around the world while traveling to and from home in Kansas. After her retirement from the U.S. Foreign Service in 1977, she lived in Salina on E. Irene Street with her sister, Lola Jane Bare and near her sister, Brucie Stevenson. Since 2003 she lived at McCall Manor in Salina before resuming her travels in 2009 visiting California, Arizona, Idaho and Mississippi. She is survived by her sister Brucie Stevenson of Salina; her brother and sister-in-law, Arthur and Patricia Miller of Fredonia; her brother-in-law Ralph Scott of Council Grove; and her sister-in-law, Nan Miller of Prescott, AZ. She is preceded in death by her parents and her sisters, Veada Miller, Lola Bare, Sallie Pickett, Martha Ruth Wright and Evelyn Scott, and by her brothers, Bower, Floyd, Frank, Benjamin Nelson, and Jim Miller. She was loved by her 25 nieces and nephews including the late Teena Patterson and many great nieces and nephews including Samantha Arredondo of Council Grove. A celebration of her life was held on Dec. 8, 2013, at her nephew's home in Berkeley, CA. A graveside memorial service will be held for friends and family on Saturday, May 24, 2014, at the Dunlap Cemetery.
