Textile Worker Who Fired Bullet Into Own Brain Enters Consent Guilty Verdict. Circuit Judge J. Henry Johnson, presiding over general sessions court here, Tuesday sentenced Delmas Childers, 29, to life imprisonment for the fatal shooting of Mrs. Bessie Ellen Parker Peterson, 32, last June 11. Childers, a textile worker and resident of Elm street, entered a consent verdict of guilty with recommendation to mercy of the court. The life sentence is mandatory. "I don't know what to say to you," Judge Johnson told Childers. "I don't know anything I could say that would help you." He passed sentence and Childers said: "Thank you, sir." Childers fired a bullet into his own skull after shooting Mrs. Peterson at a service station near here. The slug lodged in his brain, according to an attending physician. Despite the serious nature of his wound, Childers recovered and was apparently normal physically when he appeared in court this week. He was recently adjudged sane by the South Carolina Hospital. Mrs. Peterson, estranged wife of Paul Peterson, Cowpens waste cotton buyer, was shot to death as she sat in her parked car with a sister. Childers told eye-witnesses and county officers he shot Mrs. Peterson because she had told him she would not keep company with him any longer. The couple had quarreled violently prior to the shooting, it was reported.
