Bessie was born April 4, 1884, and died July 11, 1904, aged 20 years, 3 months and 6 days. She was of a bright, cheerful disposition and greatly loved by all who knew her, as the devotion of both young and old during her illness has amply shown. Her name was not enrolled in the church book but under the religious influence of her home life she was a Christian at heart and was never happier than when administering to the wants of others, especially so to her near friends to whom in time of sickness or need she was ever ready to fly to their relief and cheerfully aid them in any way she could. Yes, we will miss Bessie, but today in that land where there is neither sorrow or sighing she knows better than we can yet understand how it is that to die is gain. The longing desire of her heart was for all her friends to meet her in heaven and such was her request when bidding them goodby. Nothing that loving hands could do or the best medical skill could losen the grasp of that dreadful disease, and when she realized her time on earth was short, she didn't want to die without her name on the church book. Rev. Kestle was sent for and she became a member of the M. E. Church at Marshall, but being only a church member did not satisfy her and she persistently sought Jesus with such fervor equaled by few, when one day she said, "Pa, hold my hand and with your other hand heavenward, pray for me and maybe the dear Lord will save me." Such trusting and simple faith is not without its reward and such peace and unspeakable job came to her heart as few experience. From that time she had no fear of death, but longed to be freed from her pain racked body to be with her mother in heaven. She often talked of the dear friends she would meet there. Life to Bessie was as dear as to any other girl of her age, but God moves in a mysterious way, his way his wonders to perform. Her untimely death reminds us of life's realistic emblem, the grass which flourishes in the morning and in the evening is cut down. The energy and power of yesterday is lost in the death of today, and we who are on times side of life are puzzled and bewildered in our finile reaching forth to grasp the infinite mystery, but in the helplessness of sorrow we throw ourselves on the bosom of Divine tenderness, where we find sweet relief. She will be greatly missed, but most of all in her home, for it was there her virtues shone most brightly and her true worth was best known. Bessie leaves a father, two brothers, a step-mother, step-sister and a number of relatives and friends to mourn, her mother and infant sister having gone on before to welcome her home. Beautiful toiler thy work all done, Beautiful soil into glory gone. Beautiful life with its crown now worn, God giveth the rest. Rest from sorrows and watching and fears; Rest from all possible sighing and tears; Rest through God's endless wonderful years at home with the blest. The funeral of Miss Bessie Same of Carmel, conducted by Rev. Kestle, was attended by a large concourse of friends from various places. Furnished by Marianna Kerns Morgan 5/23/2018
