Description	:	Bessie was born in Mediapolis, Iowa on Oct. 17, 1897 and came to Minot with her parents, William and Catherine Faris, in 1904. The first two years, she lived on her father's farmstead 35 miles north of Minot. The family moved to Minot in 1906. Bessie attended McKinley School and two years of high school at the old Central building. Bessie quit school and attended the very first summer school at the Minot Normal School. Read More	Bessie was born in Mediapolis, Iowa on Oct. 17, 1897 and came to Minot with her parents, William and Catherine Faris, in 1904. The first two years, she lived on her father's farmstead 35 miles north of Minot. The family moved to Minot in 1906. Bessie attended McKinley School and two years of high school at the old Central building. Bessie quit school and attended the very first summer school at the Minot Normal School. That fall, she passed the examination which qualified her to teach a rural school on a permit if she was 18 years old. Lacking about six weeks of age, it was necessary to get someone else to teach for the length of time in the Mountrose School about four miles east of Lansford. In 1915, she taught a rural school south of Minot in Torning Township. Bessie married Walter Edwards on June 25, 1917 in her parent's house. They made their home on the Edwards farm, south of Minot, for eight years. During this time, two daughters were born, Kathryn in 1918 and Marguerite in 1922. The last year that they were on the farm, she tried to supplement their income by raising 50 turkeys for the Thanksgiving market. They were all stolen just before we planned to kill them. They held a farm sale and moved to Minot in 1925. Walter was killed in a plane accident four miles north of Minot on Aug. 10, 1928, leaving Bessie with a five month old, Bill. After Walt's death, she worked at the Red Owl Store, at Kirk's and Langseth's Cafes on Central Avenue and at Ellison's Luncheonette. She worked at Saunders Soda Fountain, Sears mail order desk, was house mother for the Mu Sigma House for three years. She married Gust Freed in 1937. He passed away May 20, 1968. Bessie and her brother, Harold, continued to live in the house their parents built in 1913. She was active in church, lodge work, and other social activities.
