BESSIE CARROLL Bessie R. Reeder, daughter of George and Emma S, Reeder, was born on her parents' farm three miles west of Tipton, Dec. 8, 1877. She attended the rural schools, after which she entered and completed her high school course in Tipton. Bessie desired to become a public school teacher and pursued her education further by enrolling at Cornell College, Mt. Vernon, and graduating with the class of 1901. However, after careful preparation for her work, circumstances necessitated that she remain at home for a while to help her mother and to be her companion. She accepted this responsibility with cheerfulness and patience, ministering to her mother's needs for a number of years. After her mother's passing she taught in a rural school north of Tipton for two years. She was united in marriage to James William Carroll Sept. 14, 1916. Two daughters were born to them. Pearl, the oldest daughter, passed away in infancy. The other daughter, Florence Michael, now lives in Washington D. C. Mrs. Carroll was a faithful member of the Methodist church. She loved her Lord and served Him in many different ways through her church. She taught Sunday school classes for many years--a work for which she was eminently suited, both by training and interest. Her leadership and activity in the Women's society as well as in other branches of church for work was an inspiration to all her associates. She was a devoted mother in the home, a kind neighbor, and a friend to those in need. Her outlook upon life was an attitude of wholesomeness and general interest in the better things of life. She was especially fond of flowers and was a member of the Garden club. Mrs. Carroll had been confined to her home for more than 13 years because of illness. She was a patient sufferer. During all the years of her illness she learned to suffer gracefully. She remained optimistic, cheerful and mentally alert until the last. She slipped away suddenly and seemingly without added suffering at 6 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 27, at the age of 75 years, nine months and 19 days. Surviving besides her husband, William Carroll, and daughter and son-in-law, Florence and Edwin Michael, are one brother, Harry H. Reeder of Epworth, and one sister, Mrs. Nellie Marks, of Yankton, S. D. She was preceded in death by two brothers and one sister. Besides these who remain there are several nieces and nephews, other relatives and many friends. Interment was at the Clarence cemetery with the Rev. A. C. Long, pastor of the First Methodist church in Tipton, and Rev. William Crossley of Waterloo, officiating. Services were at the Methodist church in Tipton at 2 p.m. Sept. 30. Pallbearers were Don Reeder, Merle Carroll, Bill Zobel, Paul Batchler, Harry Batchler and John Batchler.
