Beth Lucetta Troester was born on March 9, 1918 at Osterdock, Iowa, the daughter of Francis and Ella (Moser) Troester. She graduated from Guttenberg High School at Guttenberg, Iowa in 1935 and earned her bachelors and masters degrees in education from the University of Northern Iowa at Cedar Falls, Iowa. Beth married George Evert McFarlane on June 20, 1943 at Guttenberg, Iowa. She taught in Clayton County rural schools, Wyoming Consolidated Schools, Postville Community Schools, Guttenberg Community Schools, Stanley Consolidated School, Freemont Township #4 rural school in Fayette County, and the Oelwein Community Schools as a elementary and junior high teacher. Her teaching career spanned 40 years starting in 1943 and ending in 1983. Beth was a member of the Community of Christ Church. She served on the Oelwein City Council from 1981 to 1982 and was the only female Mayor of Oelwein from 1982 to 1989, was an evaluator for the North Central Accreditation Association Educational Programs, a member of the planning team for conferences for Iowa cities of northeast Iowa, vice-president for northeast Iowa Regional County Economic Development, a member of the Area Economic Development Commission for Northeast Iowa, on the legislative interim study committee on rural economic development and a member of the policy committee for the Iowa League Municipalities. She also served as vice-president of the Fayette County Tourism Council, member of the Iowa State steering committee on road use tax financing, chairman of the board of governors for the Oelwein Community Plaza, chairman of the building and finance committee for the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (Community of Christ Church) district church finance committee and the district church revolving loan committee. Beth was named Iowa Reading Teacher of the Year by the International Reading Association of Iowa in 1978, was the recipient of the Outstanding Contributor to the Reading Council Activities in northeast Iowa, received the State of Iowa Governor*s Leadership Award in 1988, was on the Oelwein Chamber of Commerce board of directors and received the Oelwein Chamber of Commerce Humanitarian award in 1987. She was also a member of the Oelwein Retired Teachers Association serving as president, a member of the Oelwein Business and Professional Women and received the Woman of the Year Award in 1983, a member of the MacDowell Music and Arts Organization and served as the president. Beth was also on the Northeast Iowa Reading Council serving as president, a member of the Area University Women serving as president, a member of Delta Kappa Gamma serving as president and was a member of the Republican Party. She enjoyed hiking, refinishing antiques, gardening, walking, and creative sewing. Beth is survived by her 3 Children, Douglas (Susan) McFarlane of Oelwein, Iowa, Susan (Gary) Kieser of Sacramento, California and George (Christine) McFarlane of Yorkville, Illinois; 6 Grandchildren, Matt (Molly Clinefelter) McFarlane, Travis McFarlane, Andrew Kieser, Allison Kieser, Charles McFarlane and Luke McFarlane; Sister, Lois White of Independence, Missouri. She was preceded in death by her Parents; Husband, George Evert McFarlane on May 17, 1972; Son, Steven Alan McFarlane on December 31, 1950; Sister, Mary Walker; and 2 Brothers, Jack Troester and Franklin Troester.
