October 10, 1907 OBITUARY Mrs. Eric Olson died at her home in this city on Wednesday, October 2, 1907, her death being due to Apoplexy, after an illness of ten days. The funeral was held at the Lutheran church Sunday afternoon conducted by Rev. J. M. Green, and the remains were laid to rest beside those of her husband in the Lutheran cemetery. Betsey Earness was born near Bergen, Norway January 5, 1841. In 1866 she was married to Erick R. Olson, who was also a native of Bergen, having been born near there February 22, 1842. In 1867 they immigrated to Sun Prairie, Dane county, Wisconsin where they made their home one year. The next year they went to Marquette township, Green Lake county, and resided there five years. In 1873 they came to South Dakota, driving the entire distance with ox teams, being five weeks and three days en route. They filed on a homestead claim on Section 27, within the present city limits of Brookings. At that time they were the only settlers in this immediate vicinity, and their nearest town Marshall, Minn., sixty miles distant. They lived in a dugout for three years and underwent all the hardships incident to pioneer life. The first winter they were here they hauled their supply of flour from Madelia, Minn., a distance of 150 miles. When they left Wisconsin, they had two yoke of oxen, one wagon, two cows and $100 in cash. The grasshoppers destroyed all their first three year’s crop and Mr. Olson was obliged to go east and work while Mrs. Olson and the children remained on the claim. After the ravages of the grasshoppers they raised good crops, prospered and accumulated a considerable amount of property. Mr. Olson died October 23, 1899. Mrs. Olson remained on the homestead until May of this year, when she purchased property on Fifth Avenue and thereafter made her home in this city. Mr. and Mrs. Olson were blessed with ten children, six of whom are still living. They are Lewis and Robert of Brookings township, Martin of this city, Mrs. A.M. Wold of this city, Mrs. G. E. Ostroot of Lake Preston, and Edward of Butte county, Mary, their oldest daughter died December 26, 1896 at the age of twenty-seven, and Louise died in infancy. Contributor: Gloria Graves (50649752)
