Description	:	Bette Thompson, 83, of White Lake, SD, died Wednesday, January 6, 2021 at Aurora-Brule Nursing Home in White Lake. Funeral services will be 10:30 AM Saturday, January 9, 2021 at Plankinton United Methodist Church in Plankinton. Burial will be at Mizpah Cemetery in Plankinton. Bette Lou Schaeffer was born March 25th, 1937 to Emil and Nora (Hohbach) Schaeffer along with her twin brother Robert. She was raised on a farm just south of Plankinton by her mother and uncle Louis Hohbach and grandparents John and Lena Hohbach. Bette attended grade school at the Mullivan School which was actually located at the end of their farms driveway. As a child, she loved riding her horse, Queenie. Bette graduated from Plankinton High School in May 1955 Bette was selected as the Tulip Festival Queen. Upon graduation, she remained at home to provide care to her ill mother. After her mother's passing, Bette took a position at the Cazer Variety Store. She also assisted at the Cazer Funeral Home with hair dressing and funeral preparations. Bette decided to become a business owner and opened The Flower Garden in Plankinton which she ran for over 40 years. She married the love of her life, Norman Thompson, on October 27th, 1981 at the Lutheran Church, Honolulu, Hawaii. Following a two-week honeymoon in Hawaii, they returned to Plankinton where a reception for them was held at the St Paul's Lutheran Church. They enjoyed many trips around the United States until her health prevented these. Bette was a long-time member of the St. Paul Lutheran Church, Plankinton. She held many positions in the Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary. Bette and Norman were very active in volunteering and collected and delivered Christmas gifts to the Veterans Hospital for Christmas. Bette was an avid animal lover and usually had a house cat. A very outgoing personality, she could strike up a conversation with anyone and was always willing to help in any way. She is survived by her husband, Norman and countless cousins. Bette was preceded in death by her mother, Nora; brother, Bobby; brothers-in-law, Alvin and Denton Thompson; and sister-in-law, Eileen Tobin. - Bittner Funeral Chapel
