A memorial service celebrating Betty's life will be at 10:30 AM Friday, January 21, 2022 at George Boom Funeral Home & On-Site Crematory in Sioux Falls, SD. Betty Ann Brasel was born in Sioux Falls on September 29, 1931 to Louise (Doig) and Luther Brasel. She was the eighth of eleven children. She graduated from Washington High School in 1949. It was there that she met a pesky boy who always turned around in class to borrow paper. That boy was Chuck Berg and he was the love of her life and she of his. They were united in marriage on August 5, 1950. Chuck and Betty settled in Renner, SD where Chuck grew up. Together they built a house and raised their family. Betty lived in that same house until 2015 when she moved to Washington Crossing Senior Living Apartments and later to Prince of Peace assisted living. Betty worked in the office at John Morrell for 45 years where she made many life-long friends, several of whom she still talked to nightly. After her retirement in 1998, she took a year off to babysit for her newest baby grandchild, something she'd always wanted to do for her first 6 grandkids. After that she "temporarily" went to work in the office at lntek, her son Jerry's business. She liked it so much she worked there another 15 years. Betty always had time for church, family and friends. Her fudge and apple pies were requested in advance for church bake sales and she helped for many years with the annual Renner lutefisk supper. She was a great cook and superb baker! "Betty Bars" were a staple at any family gathering. She enjoyed baking so much that for many years, she made a Christmas cookie tray for anyone in the family who wanted one. The variety of cookies on these trays was amazing! In 1975, Betty and another band mom organized the very first chicken dinner for the Washington High Marching Band. This traditional band fund raiser occurs at Sioux Falls high schools to this day. In the early 1980s, Betty discovered she had a passion for painting, especially landscapes and old barns. Many family and friends have her paintings in their homes. At Halloween, she painted and helped her grandchildren paint faces on pumpkins. She passed her love of painting on to her grandchildren, one of whom went on to get an art degree. Betty loved to shop. If Chuck was golfing, Betty was shopping. She was always dressed to the nines and she made sure Chuck was too. If she didn't need anything new, she shopped for her grandchildren. And then there were the grandchildren! They were the luckiest grandchildren in the world. There wasn't anything she wouldn't do for them, and they all adored her. Saturdays were especially memorable with a trip to the mall, lunch with chocolate pie at Bishop's and then a trip to grandma's house. All afternoon, grandma was a captive audience, showing them how to bake their favorite treats (eating a little brown sugar or scraping the bottom of the fudge pan never hurt anyone) or playing with them, doing whatever they wanted. After a busy day at grandma's, the entire Berg/Patterson family would have pizza at a local pizza joint. Maybe Betty's favorite tradition of all was to have all of her grandchildren sleep over on December 23rd. On December 24th they would wake up to fresh cinnamon rolls and sometimes spend that day in Renner until everyone came out for church and Christmas dinner. Grandma Betty was also an avid youth basketball, marching band and soccer fan. It was very rare for her to miss a grandchild's chorus/band concert or soccer/basketball game. They were all used to seeing her in the audience or on the sidelines, cheering them on. With all 7 grandkids in soccer, she must have seen 1000 games between 1984 and 2016. Grateful for sharing her life are her sons Jerry (Sylvia) Berg, Mike (Bev) Berg, and her daughter Julie (Bob) Patterson, all of Sioux Falls. Her 7 grandchildren; Clint (Dana) Berg, Andrew (Tara) Berg, Jessica (Carey) Tri, Kyle (Heather) Berg, Lyndsey (Jeremy) Pomarico, Nick Patterson, and Daniel Patterson, 13 Great Grandchildren and Sisters Linda Hall and Connie (Dale) Fritz. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Chuck in 2008, brothers Vern Brasel, Elmer Brasel, Patrick Brasel, Tom Brasel and her sisters Gladys Howlett, Marj Klein, Bev Gillespie, and Dorothy Porter. - George Boom Funeral Home
