She attended school at Kinsley until the family moved to Medicine Lodge where she graduated from high school in 1943. Gardner was born February 24, 1926 in Rozel, Kansas, daughter of David and Alta (Elmore) Blackwell. She attended school at Kinsley until the family moved to Medicine Lodge where she graduated from high school in 1943. On September 16, 1943, Betty was united in marriage with Lavern Gardner in Wichita, Kansas. Lavern was serving in the Army Air Corps, so Betty took advantage of the Government nursing program to serve as a nurse during World War II. When the war ended, they made their home in Medicine Lodge, Kansas. Betty worked as a nurse at the Medicine Lodge Memorial Hospital, assisting in many births, and for several doctors in their practice. After retiring, she and Lavern moved to Anthony. Betty was a member of the United Methodist Church and the Order of the Eastern Star, receiving her 50 year pin. She loved to travel. She and Lavern took many trips, and after he passed she continued traveling with family and friends. In August of 2015, Betty moved to Country Living in Anthony, where she made many new friends and enjoyed life immensely. On August 29, 2016, Betty passed away at the Anthony Medical Center at the age of 90 years, 6 months and 5 days. She was preceded in death by her husband, Lavern on September 7, 1993; her parents; and her sister, Virginia Blackwell. Betty will be deeply missed by her nieces and nephews: Nancy Pauly and husband, Steve, Cathy Murray, Deniese Fawcett, Janell George, Randy Patterson and wife, Barbara, Kirby Gardner and wife, Geraldine, and Kent Gardner and wife, Martha; several great nieces and nephews; many great-great nieces and nephews; and a host of other relatives and many friends. Funeral services will be held 11:00 a.m. Friday, September 2, 2016 at Prairie Rose Funeral Home with Pastor Kim Martin officiating. Graveside will follow at 1:30 p.m. at the Highland Cemetery in Medicine Lodge, Kansas. Visitation will be held 9:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. Thursday, September 1, 2016 at Prairie Rose in Anthony. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Country Living and may be sent in care of the funeral home. Prairie Rose Funeral Homes, 602 E. Main St., Anthony, KS 67003, is in charge of arrangements.
