Description	:	Betty Gretchen (Jensen) Petersen, 83, of Grand Island succumbed on Thursday, July 29, 2010, to Alzheimer's disease which began robbing her quality of life in 2006. She had been a resident at Wedgewood Care Center since August 2008. On Nov. 21, 1926, Betty was born to Lawrence and Florence (Thomas) Jensen on the family farm near Decatur. She had been a resident at Wedgewood Care Center since August 2008. On Nov. 21, 1926, Betty was born to Lawrence and Florence (Thomas) Jensen on the family farm near Decatur. Betty was the third of seven children born to that union. Betty attended elementary school at Districts 35 and 45 in Burt County. She attended Riverside High School and Tekamah High School for three and one-half years, then in January 1944, the Jensen family moved to California where Betty graduated from San Bernardino High School in 1944. Soon after graduation, Betty returned to Tekamah, to marry J. Martin Petersen on June 25, 1944. To this union were born four children, Keith, Ronn, Joan and Jeanne. Martin and Betty farmed in Burt County until 1958 when they moved to York, where they operated a dairy and raised crops. In 1962, they moved to Platte Valley Academy (a Seventh-day Adventist boarding high school) in Shelton, where Betty was employed as the assistant director of food service and director of the laundry and Martin was manager of the dairy. Later Betty was employed at Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney as a nurse's aide. She later worked at the Cornhusker Army Ammunition Plant near Grand Island until it closed in 1973. At that time she started a housekeeping business. In 1988 when Martin retired from Platte Valley Academy, Martin and Betty moved to their retirement home in Grand Island. Betty was a life-long member of the Seventh-day Adventist Church. She was a leader of children's ministries for 30 years and also volunteered in other areas of church operations. Betty's hobbies included baking, cooking, genealogy, vegetable and floral gardening, feeding and watching birds, and doing counted cross-stitch and crocheting. Betty was one of the best cooks in the country. She was a 4-H leader in York, Nebraska. Betty completed her lifelong dream of publishing a Jensen family history book, and she blessed many members of her family with their own copy of the book. Betty is survived by her husband of 66 years, J. Martin Petersen of Grand Island, her children, Keith Petersen of Loma Linda, Calif., Joan Bowen of San Antonio, Texas, and Jeanne Cummings of Littleton, Colo.; her sister, Faye Watson of Lawrence, Kan.; her brothers, Larry and wife, Brenda Jensen of Hallsville, Mo., and Dick and wife, Shawna Jensen of Cave Junction, Ariz.; her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, Julie (Petersen) and husband, Gianni Giannandrea (Mia and Tony), Jeffrey Petersen, Jason Bowen (Christopher, Natasha and Austin), Jodi (Bowen) and husband, Tim Pennington (Kianna and Cheyanne), Nathan Cummings, Kari Cummings, Amy (Petersen) and husband, John Dunzweiler (Autumn, Sierra, and Forrest), and Erik and wife, Tara Petersen; and many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and nephews, cousins and friends. Betty was preceded in death by her son, Ronn, her parents, sisters, Vesta Barbara Olson and Inez Stephens, infant brother, Gordan, and son-in-law, Ed Bowen.
