Osborne and Sarah Amelia Richards Osborne on March 13, 1922, at Kearney, and passed away June 6, 1990, at the Fillmore County Hospital in Geneva, at the age of 68 years, 2 months and 23 days. She was one of 9 children in the family. She attended Kearney Public Schools, grand school at Whittier and high school in the Longfellow Building. Osborne and Sarah Amelia Richards Osborne on March 13, 1922, at Kearney, and passed away June 6, 1990, at the Fillmore County Hospital in Geneva, at the age of 68 years, 2 months and 23 days. She was one of 9 children in the family. She attended Kearney Public Schools, grand school at Whittier and high school in the Longfellow Building. Betty took the commercial course in high school and also became very active in music. She sang in the acappella choir, a girls sextet and did a lot of solo work. Being chosen to sing a girls low voice solo for contest was a highlight which was most important to Betty. She received a “1” rating and was very proud of that accomplishment. She also sang in the adult choir at the Methodist Church. She was a National Honor Society member, president of the Commercial Club and active in a youth group called “Christian Endeavor.” Betty began dating Jerry in the fall of 1938, their senior year in high school. Upon graduation, Betty became secretary to the Rev. N. Spooner, the Methodist minister in Kearney. In addition to her secretarial duties, Betty sang for many weddings and funerals. She also sang in her first “Messiah” as a member of the Kearney State College Choir. Jerry gave Betty an engagement ring in December of 1939. At the time of their engagement, he was an apprentice printer for the Kearney Daily Hub. They were married on July 15, 1940, by the Rev. M.W. Brooks, a Methodist minister in Norton, Ks. They made their home in Kearney until September, when they moved to Holdrege where Jerry was employed by the Holdrege Daily Citizen and Betty was involved with being a homemaker and mother. Betty became an Army wife after Jerry entered into the service in July of 1942. After basic training, she and their daughter, Judy, followed Jerry to Camp Robinson, Ar., near little Rock and on to Camp Fannin, Tx., near Tyler. When Jerry went overseas, Betty returned to Kearney where she resided until the end of WWII. After Jerry’s discharge, they then returned to Holdrege. They purchased the Elm Creek Beacon in 1946, where Betty became associate publisher and bookkeeper until a flood forced them out of business. They moved briefly to Superior, before settling in Geneva in 1949. Jerry worked for The Nebraska Signal and Betty again became “full time homemaker” and mother. She was active in the Congregational Church choir and other local organizations. She sang in several “Messiah” presentations during this time. In 1964 they purchased the Bruning Banner, moved to Bruning, and Betty again became associate publisher and bookkeeper. They added the Alexandria Argus in 1967 and in 1973 sold their paper to the Edgecombe family. Jerry became editor of the Nebraska Signal at this time and Betty continued to sell ads and do bookkeeping for the Banner-Argus. The family moved into their present home at 1133 C Street in Geneva in January of 1975. Jerry and Betty opened their own printing business in the basement of their home, “Jerry’s Printing Shop,” in 1979. Betty and Jerry retired from the business in 1984, and began to enjoy their retirement years. Her health began to fail while still in Bruning, culminating in arthritis and asthma. She suffered a slight stroke in 1981. She was hospitalized in both Geneva and Lincoln Hospitals many times and passed away in Fillmore County Hospital. She was preceded in death by her parents, Bert and Amelia Osborn of Kearney; an infant brother, Frank Osborne, brothers, Robert and Wayne Osborne and by a sister, Merle Weaver. Surviving are her husband, Jerry; children, Judy Pendergraft and husband, Ron; Don Pickerell and wife Dorothy; Sue Naiman and husband, Delbert, Denise Smith and husband, Chuck; Nancy Calahan and husband, Scott, sisters Mildred Sandberg, Merna Fox, and Iola Waugh; a brother, Rolland Osborn, and 14 grandchildren. Funeral services were conducted from the Farmer & Son Funeral Home in Geneva on Saturday, June 9, with the Rev. Richard Turner, pastor of First United Methodist Church of Kearney, the church of her childhood, officiating. Mrs. Judy Ackland accompanied Curtis Prater who sang “The Lord’s Prayer.” Pallbearers were John Edgecombe Sr., Dean Reinsch, Richard Wagner, Don Hensley, Don Jacque and Guy Brown Jr. Burial was in the Geneva Public Cemetery.
