She passed away on Sunday afternoon, April 19, 2015 at Elm Heights Care Center in Shenandoah, Iowa at the age of 89 years, 9 months and 5 days. Betty grew up in a large family, being the fourth of nine children, and graduated from Seymour High School in 1943. On September 20, 1946 she did marry Claude Eugene Engle in Seymour. They moved to the Engle family farm near Corydon, Iowa. In 1947, their first child, Claude Eugene Engle, Jr. was born; followed by Mark Calvin Engle in 1953 and Martha Ilene Engle in 1954. She was married to Claude, Sr. for 59 years. She was an active member of the First Baptist Church, having been baptized in 1964 at the Corydon church. Betty taught Sunday school, was a BYF leader and served on various church boards, Eastern Star and American Legion Auxiliary. She enjoyed cooking, canning, sewing and needlework. Her true love though was her family; helping to raise her younger sisters as well as her own children. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Claude; sisters, Sarah Ellen Snook, Dorothy Louise Collins, Mary Lou Casey and Elsie May (Helen) Clark; a brother, Elmer Eugene (Buddy) Clark; and a brother-in-law, Carl Engle and his wife Wanda. Survivors include her children, Claude Engle, Jr. of Shenandoah, Iowa, Mark Engle of Marshalltown, Iowa, Martha Engle Pratt and her husband Gordon of New Market, Iowa; granddaughters, Melissa and Sarah; grandsons, Beau, Alex, Micah and Michael; four great granddaughters; two great grandsons; three sisters, Donna Lorine Dutton of Centerville, Iowa, Virginia Ann Gellison and Linda Sue White of Seymour, Iowa; along with nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Memorial graveside services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, April 24, 2015 at Memory Cemetery near New Market, Iowa. Burial will be in the Memory Cemetery. Visitation with the family present will take place on Thursday evening, April 23, 201 5 from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Kirsch Funeral Chapel in Shenandoah. A memorial fund is being established in Betty’s name. Online remembrances or condolences can be shared at www.kirschfuneral.com. The Kirsch Funeral Chapel of Shenandoah is in charge of arrangements.
