Betty was born January 15, 1927, at her home near Leon, Iowa, the beloved daughter of Luther Thomas and Georgia Martisha (Beasley) Baker. She was the second of five children, Bernice, Don, Bonnie Lou, and Mary Louise. Betty graduated from Leon High School in 1945, where she participated in cheerleading and basketball. Read More	Obituary Obituary - Betty Poole Betty Jean Poole peacefully passed August 2, 2020, at the Decatur County Hospital in Leon, Iowa. Betty was born January 15, 1927, at her home near Leon, Iowa, the beloved daughter of Luther Thomas and Georgia Martisha (Beasley) Baker. She was the second of five children, Bernice, Don, Bonnie Lou, and Mary Louise. Betty graduated from Leon High School in 1945, where she participated in cheerleading and basketball. She also loved to roller skate and dance. After graduation she worked at Hanoco, walking from town to the job. She “made” the cabins working with her cousin Carol Lee Jenkins, while living with her aunt and uncle. On April 14, 1946, Betty married Ellsworth Dickson Poole. For a brief period of time she worked at Rexall Drug. On November 19, 1946, their son, James Leonard, was born. When Jim was ten, they moved to Colorado for one year. Upon returning to Leon, they traded their Buick for the house they lived in for decades. Betty and Dick enjoyed daily rides in the country, camping and fishing. They danced at every opportunity and spent many evenings with Bonnie and Bob Spidle at the Boat in Osceola. Many memories were made attending Dick’s annual Army reunions. Betty went to live at Westview Acres in 2015, where she loved to joke and kid with everyone. “You can’t be in a bad mood with her around,” nurses reported. Betty’s life is celebrated by her two grandchildren, Jodi (Matthew) Bybee of Ankeny and Dr. James (Meredith) Poole of Urbandale and six great grandchildren, Ryan, Dylan and Blake Bybee, and Sam, Kate, and Libby Poole, her daughter-in-law, Vicky Poole of Clive, her sisters, Bonnie Spidle and Mary Louise Blodgett, and many nieces, nephews and their families. We will all miss her. Preceding her in death were her parents, Luther and Georgia Baker, her sister Bernice, her brother Don, her husband Dick, and her son Jim. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to the family for distribution to causes close to Betty’s heart. Memorial services will be held at the Leon Cemetery, Leon, Iowa at 2 p.m. Friday, August 7, 2020, with Pastor Terry D. Roberts officiating. Burial will be in the Leon Cemetery. Arrangements were through the Slade – O’Donnell Funeral Home.
