Description	:	Betty Jean Vermazen, 94, of Keokuk, IA., died Sunday, January 12, 2014 at River Hills Village in Keokuk, Iowa. Betty was born on September 20, 1919, in Keokuk, Iowa, the daughter of Edwin and Nell Bankson Banghart. She married Roger J. Vermazen on July 3, 1939 in Edina, Missouri. Betty was born on September 20, 1919, in Keokuk, Iowa, the daughter of Edwin and Nell Bankson Banghart. She married Roger J. Vermazen on July 3, 1939 in Edina, Missouri. He preceded her in death on September 20, 1993. Betty was a lifelong resident of Keokuk and a homemaker. She attended the Keokuk Presbyterian Church, and was a member of the High Tension Club. While in high school she excelled in field and track, and in 1935 she ran against the top German track star. She participated in many plays and once portrayed Marylyn Monroe. She worked for Anschutz Photography and later helped with a dance studio. She is survived by three children: Julie Jean Downey of Austin, Minnesota; Roger Jeffery Vermazen (Elaine) of Seattle, Washington; and Kenneth Vermazen of Keokuk, Iowa. She is also survived by six grandchildren, eight great grandchildren, two great great grandchildren, and two brothers: Raymond Banghart of Pennsylvania and David Banghart of Texas. She was preceded in death by her parents, three sisters, and three brothers. A private family graveside service will be held at a later date at Keokuk National Cemetery. Memorials may be directed to the Arthritis Foundation or the American Cancer Society.
