Smart, stylish and feisty for ever bit of her 96 years, she graduated from Central High School in 1939 and turned a 1 year scholarship to the University of Omaha into a 48 years career at Mutual of Omaha. Beginning in 1940 as a member of the "Flying Squadron", a roving pool of office workers, Betty landed in the payroll department in 1942 and steadily ascended the ranks. Staff members in her payroll department observed, "We didn't really need college-we attended the School of Betty Beard. But Betty understood the value of education and together with her husband Jim Beard leaves a lasting legacy for generations of students to come through their generous support of the University of Nebraska Foundation.
