She had spent the last five years living in a Portland retirement community. More recently, she lived in a foster care home where loving angels assisted her as she lived with Alzheimer's. Betty was born on November 27, 1920, in Waterville, WA to Paris and Rose Wainscott. She was the second of four children. Her brother, Phil precedes her in death; as do her parents; and her husband, Hank. Her two loving sisters are Rose Marie Hannahs of Portland and Shan Warner of Orondo, WA. Betty grew up in Waterville where she was very active in school as a cheerleader, class officer, and on the honor roll. She was also a lifeguard at the local swimming pool. Music was an important part of her life, as she took piano and violin lessons from an early age. In 1939, she went to Washington State College (now WSU) on a violin scholarship. While at school, she pledged Alpha Gamma Delta sorority and fell in love with Henry "Hank" L. Baker, Jr., whose fraternity, SAE, was right across the street. Betty and Hank were married on Pearl Harbor Day, December 7, 1941, in the Wainscott family home in Waterville. They lived in several places during the War and then settled in Portland in 1945. In 1947, their first child, Scott, was born in Portland, and in 1953, their daughter, Janet, was born in Pendleton. Hank worked for Texaco Oil Co. and the family lived in Pendleton, Spokane, Butte, Idaho Falls and Boise. Throughout the years, Betty and Hank maintained close friends in each of these places but always returned to Waterville and Lake Chelan to be with their families. Betty was a lifetime member of Eastern Star and PEO. Her home chapters are in Waterville. She also belonged to a bridge club in Pendleton and went back to celebrate their 50th anniversary of playing cards! Gardening was also one of Betty's passions and she grew beautiful flowers wherever she lived. Everyone who knew Betty, realized that a very special person had touched his or her life. She was always positive and made the best of every day. Loving her husband, children and grandchildren was a joy. Her huge smile would fill a room with hope and happiness and her tender voice gave those around her unconditional love. She believed in God and made Him the center of her life. Betty had a wonderful life. In 1991, she and Hank celebrated 50 years of marriage together. After Hank passed away in 1993, Betty was reunited with her childhood sweetheart, Sam Garrett of Waterville, and they were able to spend several years as companions, before Sam passed away in 2000. Her son, Scott of Portland, his children, Andrew of Portland, Jason and his wife, Shiarron of Los Angeles; her daughter, Janet and her husband, Jerry of East Wenatchee, and their children, Jennifer of Salt Lake City and Curtis of Federal Way, WA survive Betty. Her sisters, Rose Marie Hannahs and Shan Warner; sister-in-law, Dorothy Wainscott; and numerous cousins, also survive Betty. Scott's wife, Judy Cosby Baker, precedes her in death. Waterville Funeral Home is making final arrangements. A Service of Celebration will be held in Waterville on September 16, 2006, at noon. This celebration will take place in the Waterville Mausoleum, where Betty will be Interred next to her husband, Hank. Donations in her memory can be made to the Waterville School Music Program, in care of Waterville School, or The Waterville Swim Pool, in care of the Town of Waterville.
