She was born Aug. 23, 1939, in Osceola, Clarke, Iowa, the eldest daughter of Edgar Earl and Ethel Marie(Beal)Carder Sr. She married Robert Downing. Betty graduated from Ottumwa High School in 1957 and worked at the Day's Inn Hotel. She was an active member of Ottumwa Baptist Temple. Betty was an avid genealogist. She was born Aug. 23, 1939, in Osceola, Clarke, Iowa, the eldest daughter of Edgar Earl and Ethel Marie(Beal)Carder Sr. She married Robert Downing. Betty graduated from Ottumwa High School in 1957 and worked at the Day's Inn Hotel. She was an active member of Ottumwa Baptist Temple. Betty was an avid genealogist. She was a member of the Iowa Genealogical Society, the Illinois Genealogical Society, Clarke County Genealogical Society and served as vice president of the Wapello County Genealogical Society. She loved discovering her family's roots as well as helping other people to discover theirs. She was a loving, helpful wife, sister, aunt and friend to many; always putting others before herself. She was preceded in death by her parents; her brother, Edgar Carder Jr.; her sister, Ramona(Carder)Basket, and her sister, Elizabeth Carder. She is survived by her husband; two nephews, Edgar(Jessica)Baskett and Ivan(Tina)Baskett; two great-nieces, Grace and Faith; two great-nephews, Dalton and Wayne; as well as many friends. Open Visitation will be 9am Thursday at Johnson's Funeral Chapel with the family present from 9:30-11am. Funeral services will be 1pm Thursday at Johnsons Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Randy Miller of the Ottumwa Baptist Temple. Burial will follow at Shaul Cemetery in Ottumwa. Memorials may be made to the Wapello County Genealogical Society and Ottumwa Baptist Temple.
