Evelyn Smith is her surviving sister while Mike Tischler and Annie Kehl preceded her in death. Betty and her husband-to-be, Harry Junior Postal, met in Colo, where she graduated in 1941from Colo High School. Harry, after seeing her for the very first time, let it be known that he was going to marry 'that girl'. True to his word, they were married November 30, 1942, and were together until his passing March 7, 1996. They made their home in Des Moines and started their family in 1946, after Harry returned from WWII. Harry and Betty had four beautiful daughters and a boy. Dianne and her husband, Tom Mahedy, call Des Moines home. She gave Betty a grandson, Jeff Moser, and a granddaughter, Shannon Housley. Great grandchildren from Shannon are Andrew and Alec Johnson, Ashlyn, Kole and Kaiden Housley. Harry, married to Pam, lives in Stockton, CA. Another granddaughter Elisa Leilani and grandson Benjamin were added. Elisa added two more great grandsons, Neal and Reno. Then along came Shelley, who lives with her husband Don Stover, in Chariton, Iowa. They gave Betty two more grandsons, Mike and Tom (deceased). From Mike comes a great grandson, Blake Stover. Tammy, baby number four, and her husband John Feeley of Runnells, Iowa, added her three daughters and Betty's three additional granddaughters Tasha, Brianna and Carmen Millard. Tasha's Shae Jackson and Carmen's Brayden Cochran are two more great grandchildren. The youngster, Yvonne, lives with her husband Dominic Ceretti, in Des Moines. They gave Betty granddaughter Chelsea Rae, and grandsons Caleb, Jason and Chris (deceased). Jason and Whitney Ceretti have great grandchildren Abby and Neely. Betty retired from the Drake University campus post office at age 74. With the last name Postal, where else could she work. While at Drake her choice for a fun course to study was Japanese. She loved her flower garden and gardening was a passion, where she spent hours planting, pruning and picking. Her favorite poem was The Children's Hour by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow and Betty could recite her favorite Shakespearean sonnet without hesitation. Reading her Bible was important and she could easily discuss with you the Old or New Testament. The New York Yankees were Betty's team and she watched all the games she could get. Doing crosswords, jumbles and Jeopardy were some other favorite pastimes. It's amazing she had any time for pastimes as she crocheted afghans for 100 family members and friends. And Betty loved fashion through the years. She could be elegant in a gown or casual in embroidered, jeweled jeans. And let's not forget her signature neck scarf. Today, Betty's picture hangs on the wall of Niland's Cafe, where she waitressed during high school, in Colo, Iowa. If you are ever there, check her out, just like Harry did in 1940. Betty and Harry on the dance floor were full of grace and elegance…and as they moved together, they knew they would have this dance for the rest of their lives. As a daughter, bride, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, friend and neighbor she was loved and will be remembered, then missed all the more as time passes by. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Monday, December 7, 2015 at Iles Dunn's Chapel. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. Burial will be at Colo Cemetery, Colo, IA. Please join the family after the burial in Colo for a lunch in Betty's Honor at Niland's Cafe on the Lincoln Highway, Colo, Iowa. Memorial contributions may be made in loving memory of Betty Postal to Animal Rescue League or Niland's Cafe.
