Description	:	Betty Lee Spilman, 90, of Bloomfield, Iowa passed away November 9, 2016 at the Golden Age Care Center in Centerville, Iowa. She was born April 27, 1926 in Troy, Iowa to Harry H. and Reva M. Darnell Fickel. She married John Dean Spilman August 20, 1946. He passed away January 9, 1981. Betty graduated from Troy High School in 1944 and Parsons College a short time later. She taught in one-room schools prior to 1960 and then taught in Floris, Troy, and Bloomfield until retirement after more than 30 years of teaching. She was born April 27, 1926 in Troy, Iowa to Harry H. and Reva M. Darnell Fickel. She married John Dean Spilman August 20, 1946. He passed away January 9, 1981. Betty graduated from Troy High School in 1944 and Parsons College a short time later. She taught in one-room schools prior to 1960 and then taught in Floris, Troy, and Bloomfield until retirement after more than 30 years of teaching. After retiring from teaching, she owned the "Yesteryear and Today" antique store on the square in Bloomfield. Betty was active in many community organizations including the Retired Teachers Association, American Legion Auxiliary, Davis County Historical Society, AARP, and helping with the Troy Academy Historical Society. In her free time, Betty loved to study genealogy and her family history. She is survived by two daughters, Sue Spilman, Carol Reames both of Bloomfield; two sons, Bill (Sarah) Spilman of Waunakee, Wisconsin, Doug (Lynn) Spilman of Osage Beach, Missouri; five grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; three sisters, Dorothy Fleming of Bloomfield, Shirley (Larry) Lagle of Eldon, Iowa, Donna (Larry) Stevenson of Bloomfield; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents and husband. Funeral services will be at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, November 13, 2016 at the Wagler Funeral Home in Bloomfield with Rev. Donna Olinger officiating. Burial will be at the IOOF Cemetery in Bloomfield. Visitation will begin at 9:00 a.m. on Sunday with the family present to greet friends from 12:30 p.m. until the time of the service. A memorial has been established to the Troy Academy Historical Society.
