Description	:	On Sunday, January 8, 2017, Betty Lee Watkins VanGlabeke, passed away peacefully at Arbor Acres United Methodist Retirement Community in Winston Salem, NC. Betty was born on July 22, 1924, in Howard County, near Mt. Airy, MD, on her grandparents' Mullinix farm. She was the daughter of the late Rudy Edward Watkins and Delma Viola Mullinix. She was predeceased by her husband, Eric Leopold VanGlabeke, and a brother, Rudell Edward Watkins, of Friendswood, Texas. She was a longtime member of Damascus United Methodist Church. Read More	On Sunday, January 8, 2017, Betty Lee Watkins VanGlabeke, passed away peacefully at Arbor Acres United Methodist Retirement Community in Winston Salem, NC. Betty was born on July 22, 1924, in Howard County, near Mt. Airy, MD, on her grandparents' Mullinix farm. She was the daughter of the late Rudy Edward Watkins and Delma Viola Mullinix. She was predeceased by her husband, Eric Leopold VanGlabeke, and a brother, Rudell Edward Watkins, of Friendswood, Texas. She was a longtime member of Damascus United Methodist Church. Music was always a part of her life. Betty played the piano and sang in the choir and was a member of the prayer group. Betty loved the outdoors, especially the birds and the squirrels which she watched daily at Arbor Acres. She graduated from Mt Airy High School in 1941 and immediately went to work. Her career included working for U.S. Public Health Service and the Atomic Energy Commission. A life-long dream of travelling to Europe became a reality when she accepted a position with the Atomic Energy Commission in Brussels, Belgium, before her retirement, after 38 years of service. She met her husband Eric during this time and they moved to Antwerp, Belgium, She learned to speak Flemish so she could enjoy conversation with family and friends. They loved travelling and were able to see most of Europe. One of her greatest joys during those years was listening to the great Cathedral organs and choirs and learning of the European culture. After Eric's retirement they moved to North Carolina spending their last years at Arbor Acres. Betty was a devoted mother to her children and was very proud of their accomplishments. She is survived by a son, Gerald Edward Smith and wife, Kathy Acton, of Winston Salem, NC; daughter, Sharon Lee Smith Warfield., and husband, Wayne, of Laytonsville, MD; two grandchildren; Jason Warfield and fiance, Suzanne Gilbert, and Kristin Warfield; three step-grandchildren Ashley Walker, Stewart Welch and Katie Clayton; and 8 step-great-grandchildren. The service of Joy and Celebration will be held at Providence United Methodist Church, on Sunday, February 5, 2017, at 1:00 p.m. with a private inurnment. Memorial contributions can be made to the Arbor Acres Methodist Retirement Community, 1240 Arbor Road, Winston Salem, North Carolina, 27104, or Providence United Methodist Church, 3776 Kemptown Church Road, Monrovia, Maryland, 21770.
