Robinson June 25, 1922 - June 08, 2010 CUMBERLAND — Betty Lee (Whitworth) Robinson, 87, of Cumberland, went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, June 8, 2010, following a long illness. She had most recently resided in Country House, Cumberland. Born June 25, 1922, in Keyser, W.Va., she was the daughter of Donald P. Whitworth, D.D.S. and Anna Lee (Pagenhardt) Whitworth. She was also preceded in death by her loving husband of 50 years, John J. Robinson Jr., a local area dentist; and two brothers, Donald P. Whitworth Jr. and Fuller B. Whitworth, a local physician in the Cumberland area. After being advanced one grade and graduating as valedictorian from Bruce High School in 1939, and Frostburg State Teachers College in 1943, then raising her family, she became a teacher in Mineral County in 1969 for over 20 years. Betty is fondly remembered by all the young lives she touched along the way. After retiring as a teacher, she volunteered many more years as an assistant in Ridgeley Primary-Middle and Frankfort Middle Schools. She spent many summers volunteering at WV Science Camp as a teacher and at the YMCA Day Camp as the director of arts and crafts. She was named an honorary Citizen of West Virginia for her volunteer work by the governor. In 1997, she changed her full time volunteer service location to the Riverside YMCA following its grand opening. She was a longtime member of the First Presbyterian Church of Cumberland, where she loved being a member of the choir. She was a charter member of the church’s handbell choir and a talented pianist. In addition to her musical abilities, she was an accomplished artist. An adult competitive swimmer, Betty earned many top honors in regional and national swimming competitions into her late seventies and officiated swimming competitions for all ages for over 30 years. Surviving are her four children of whom she was very proud, John J. “Jay” Robinson IV, Charleston, S.C., Donald Robinson and his wife Holly, Frostburg, the Rev. Dr. C. Scott Robinson and his wife Laura, Oakland, and Laurie (Robinson) Berkow and her husband Jan, Pittsburgh, Pa. Also surviving are her sister and brother-in-law, June and Emmett Ryan, Westernport; sister-in-law, Virginia Robinette; nine grandchildren, Julie Robeson, Adriel Robinson, Kalia Robinson, Brittany Robinson, Devon Robinson, Casey Haddy, Sean Berkow, Scott Berkow and Kyle Berkow; two great-grandsons, Carver Robeson and Jayce Springer; three nephews; and four nieces. Friends will be received at the Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A., 108 Virginia Ave., Cumberland, (www.scarpellifuneralhomes.com) on Thursday from 5 to 8 p.m. Funeral services will be conducted at the First Presbyterian Church on Washington Street, Cumberland, on Friday at 11 a.m. with Pastor John Dillon and the Rev. Dr. C. Scott Robinson officiating. Friends will be received at the church from 10 to 11 a.m. Interment will be in Hillcrest Memorial Park.
