Surrounded by her children, she passed away peacefully as the sun set. Betty was born in Abbeville, SC, on April 29, 1933 to John and Willie Mae Godfrey, the fifth born of eight children. Her family moved to Anderson, SC, for a short period of time before settling in Greenville, SC, her hometown. Her father passed away when she was five years old. Betty then took on many responsibilities in order to keep her family together. She left school at at early age to give financial support to her siblings by working at the Dunean Cafe as a waitress and at J.P. Steven's cotton mill as a laborer. At 18 years of age, she married Tolly C. Allison of Greenville. After entering into the Army, they were stationed in the U.S. and abroad, having four children along the way. Betty's life was her children and she raised them with a strong Christian background. She taught Sunday School, led prayer workshops, and served as the den mother for the Cub Scouts. After arriving in Moses Lake in 1969, Betty was left with the task of raising her children alone. She did so by working various jobs before securing a prominent position with Carnation-Nestle Company where she worked as an inspector until her retirement in 1995. Betty enjoyed sewing, baking, and gardening and relaxing on her porch swing visiting with anybody that came by. Everyone was welcome in her home and rarely did anyone leave without a bite to eat and a glass of iced tea. She gave everything she had and asked for nothing in return. Betty passionately played the piano and comforted all with her gift of music. She loved barbershop quartets, especially "The Blackwood Brothers," whom she finally had her dream come true to see perform live in Moses Lake in June 2002. She also loved "The Basinaires" from out hometown. For the past several years they would come and sing to her (before her tragic pedestrian / auto accident) and then many times afterward. She always maintained that sparkle and sense of humor no matter what happened to her. She will be sorely missed by any and all whose lives she touched. Betty preached three things religiously: "Be honest, work hard, and never judge anyone by the color of their skin." She was a survivor and we were blessed to have her for our mother. Betty was predeceased in death by her parents and four brothers. She lives behind four children: Tony Allison of Bellevue; Colleen and Rob Smith of Moses Lake; Teena and Lynn Barth of Moses Lake and Tim Allison of Moses Lake. Also, her three grandsons, Timmy, age 13, and Bradley Allison, age 10, and Anthony Smith, age 11. Betty's family would like to share a graveside memorial service with her extended family at Wisteria College (Silvia, Helen, Elysha, and Derek, Florence, and Nicole), as well as all of her friends and neighbors, at 10 am on Friday, July 12, 2002 at Pioneer Memorial's new Garden of Tranquility with Pastor Gene White officiating. Arrangements are in the care of Bensons Family Funeral Services and Cemetery and Nicoles Funeral Home.
