Betty Lillian Leota Claussen, daughter of William & Caroline (Sanny) Claussen, was born Dec 24, 1919 on their farm north of Hartford, SD, baptized into the Hartford Evangelical Lutheran Church, 1920. Betty Lillian Leota Claussen, daughter of William & Caroline (Sanny) Claussen, was born Dec 24, 1919 on their farm north of Hartford, SD, baptized into the Hartford Evangelical Lutheran Church, 1920. She graduated from the Ginsbach School District No. 104 on June 6, 1933. Her appreciation of music and dancing began at home and continued throughout her 98 years. Betty began working at the age of 15 as a hired girl which honed her skills as a meticulous housekeeper, cook. On October 30, 1939, she was united in marriage to Norman Dean at her parents home. Their early married years in Sioux Falls, SD blessed them with 2 daughters; after which, Norman was drafted into WWII, leaving Betty to care for the girls on her own. She delivered their son on the day Norman returned. In 1946, they moved to Hartford, where a third daughter arrived. Betty graduated the School Lunch short course in June of 1959, followed by Certified manager in June of 1967 and Supervisor Manager, in June of 1968. She served as a Hartford Lunch Lady for 10 years. In 1968, she began in domestic cleaning service, self -employed until her retirement in 1986. Her last dance with Norman came in March 1978. Betty married Leonard Olson June 30, 1979. From their home in Sioux Falls, SD., they shared travel, with their last dance in 1989. His family became her family. She continued traveling and dancing with Special Friend Casey Ahnberg for over a decade and Dennis Jensen for another. Dancing remained her first love, only second to her service to family, friends and strangers. Strong but humble, independent yet caring, a woman of beauty and grace, her motto was When life gives you lemons, make lemonade and then share it. Betty lived and shared her dedication to Christ and his Church every day of her life. From home, to a founding member of St Johns Lutheran Church in SF, SD, through teaching Sunday School and serving in circle at Christ Lutheran in Hartford, and countless hours at First Lutheran and the Lydia/Rachel Circle in SF, SD, she offered her hands and faith. She volunteered at the ICU West Waiting Area at Sioux Valley (Sanford) Hospital receiving Volunteer of the Month for then, 2100 hours of service, and volunteered for the VFW . Joy and dancing often combined with her service to others. Additionally, The Red Hatters was a source of fun, friends and fashion. Grateful for having shared the dance, her life, food and faith are her children: Marion Hartman and Marilyn McLeod, Sioux Falls, SD, Robert (Sandy) Dean, Hartford, SD, and Patt Kapp, Fayetteville, NC. She is additionally survived by 8 grandchildren: Kent Hartman, Paul Eddie (Jacqui) Hartman, Jane McLeod, Beth (Phil) Claussen, Amy (Todd) Hofer, Mary (John) Malik, Meg (Chad) Schilda, Tanya (Arthur) McIlravy; 16 great-grandchildren; 2 great- great grandchildren, as well as her Olson step -family, sisters-in-law Audrey Wintersteen, Dee Doss, and Sharon Claussen; along with countless nieces and nephews and all who knew her. Betty was preceded in death by husbands, Norman and Leonard; special friends, Casey and Dennis; great-grandson Lucas Malik; sons- in-law Dale Hartman and Lyle McLeod; siblings: Gertrude (Art) Reuter, Elenora (Bill) Holiway, Loretta (Tony) Pressler, Edwin Claussen, Alton Claussen and Claussen half- siblings Henry, Emma Grotjohn, Jean Harris and Mary Olson.
