Betty's family would like to express deep appreciation to the staff at the Hospice & Community Care Center in Rock Hill and at the Westminster Rehab Center for the outstanding care and support they provided during her final days. Betty Long was born in Conway, South Carolina on April 2, 1923, to Rosa Belle Moore and James Hart Long. She led a happy, active childhood in Conway always under the protection of her older brother, Hart. Betty played basketball and was a cheerleader in high school and enjoyed social summers at nearby Myrtle Beach. She graduated from Coker College in 1944 with a degree in voice. She describes her four college years in her memoirs as "a wonderful party." She particularly adored her baby brother, Johnny who was born when she was 14 years old and whom she joyfully took with her everywhere she went. After graduation, Betty taught school in Conway. In 1946, she married her childhood sweetheart, John "Jack" Jordan, who had opened his dental office in nearby Myrtle Beach. Betty gave birth to her daughter, Margaret in 1948 in Myrtle Beach and to her son, Tommy in Fort Benning, Georgia where they lived from 1950 to 1952 while Jack practiced dentistry in the Air Force. The young family moved to Charlotte in 1958 where Jack maintained his successful orthodontics practice until he retired in 1986. Betty and Jack spent their retirement years in Florida from 1987 until 2004. They returned to Charlotte in 2004 to reside at the Carriage Club of Charlotte before settling in Rock Hill in 2007. All who knew Betty were captivated by her funny stories, her sense of humor and her dramatic flair. She was always happy to indulge an audience with her account of how she drove her first car right into the front of Nye's Drug Store when the brakes failed; customers scattered as she narrowly missed a display of Jergens lotion. Or the time she met Margaret's new neighbors wearing only a cardboard box when she got locked out of the house during a hot flash. And no one can forget her elaborate disguise as Hattie Mae Satterfield--complete with latex mask and custom-made fake teeth--who frequently barged in unannounced at wedding showers and birthday parties to shake things up a bit. Betty's creativity and talents went far beyond storytelling and clever disguises. She began singing solos in church at the age of four. Throughout her life, she was the featured soprano at many weddings, funerals and community events. In the 1980's, she began pursuing a new hobby as a miniaturist. She designed a spectacularly-detailed Victorian dollhouse that won several prestigious awards and the tiny domed Christmas trees and other miniature scenes she created for friends and family are museum-quality treasures that will live on for generations. Even in the last few years of her life, Betty crafted hundreds of hand-painted Christmas ornaments on sand dollars and sea shells that she would share with her friends, neighbors and the staff at Westminster. Like her husband, Jack, Betty was an avid golfer who claimed championships from golf clubs around the southeast, including the Dunes Club in Myrtle Beach, Carmel Country Club in Charlotte, River Hills at Lake Wylie and Whispering Oaks in Florida. She was also an active volunteer in a number of community organizations including the Charity League of Charlotte, the Dental Auxiliary and the Junior Golf Association. Betty is preceded in death by her parents; her younger brother, Johnny in 1990 and her husband, Jack in 2013. She is survived by her older brother, James Hart Long of Florida; daughter, Margaret Jordan Caudle and her husband, David; son, Thomas (Tommy) Jordan and his wife, Susan; five grandchildren, Brandon Short Blell, Kevin Short, Max Jordan, Emily Sutton and Bennett Jordan and six great-grandchildren, Thatcher Short, Dorian Blell, Liliana Blell, Emma Reece Sutton, Charley Jordan and Ryder Jordan. The memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, December 11th in the chapel at Westminster Presbyterian Church, 1320 India Hook Road, Rock Hill, SC 29732. The family will receive friends immediately following the service at the church.
