Betty was born on May 12, 1928, on the family farm east of Bertrand in Phelps County, NE. Betty was the eldest of two daughters born to Walter Harold Ernest and Bertha (Ebmeier) Maaske. Betty was born on May 12, 1928, on the family farm east of Bertrand in Phelps County, NE. Betty was the eldest of two daughters born to Walter Harold Ernest and Bertha (Ebmeier) Maaske. Betty attended St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Bertrand, NE. while growing up. Betty received her education from Bertrand (NE.) Community Schools, graduating from Bertrand (NE.) High School with the class of 1945. She then pursued higher education to receive her teaching credentials from University of Nebraska at Kearney, NE. and Valparaiso University in Valparaiso, IN. Following her education, Betty taught in rural Phelps County, NE. schools. On August 26, 1951, Betty was united in marriage to Herman Holen and to this union four children were born: Kathy, Weston, Marcy, and Tami. The couple farmed near Bertrand, NE. In 2007, they were honored by Ak-Sar-Ben with the Nebraska Pioneer Farm Award for 100 years of continuous family ownership. Following retirement, Betty opened "The Growing Child" clothing store in Bertrand, NE. which she operated for eight years. Betty and Herman loved to travel. They visited all 50 states on various trips, and also enjoyed trips to Europe and the Scandinavian Countries. They took their children and grandchildren to Disney World on their 40th Anniversary and to San Antonio on their 50th Anniversary, and on many trips throughout the Colorado mountains. During her lifetime, Betty loved to tend to her flower garden. She enjoyed friendships from school, MNO Extension Club, coffee club, book club, card club, church and community. Betty enjoyed supporting her grandchildren and attending many of their activities. Her family was her greatest joy. On January 16, 2004, she was preceded in death by her husband, Herman. Betty was an active member of the Westmark Evangelical Free Church, Phelsp County, NE. The church played a big part in her life and she often thanked God for his blessings and especially for His Son, Jesus. She had a way of being thankful in both the good times and the bad times. Betty and Herman were engaged on Valentine's Day in 1951, and according to God's plan they were reunited in Glory on Valentine's Day 2013. Betty was preceded in death by: parents; husband, Herman Holen; grandchildren, Jonathan Lucas and Grace Sauter; great-granddaughter, Lexi Hock; brothers-in-law, Floyd Holen and his wife, Grac, Chester Holen and his wife, Gladys, Norris Holen and his wife, Flo, Virgil Holen and his wife, Doris, Milford Holen and his wife, Bernice, Wallace Holen and his wife, Naomi, Ralph Holen and sisters-in-law: Rachael Bard and her husband, Franklin and DeLoris Gustafson and her husband, Keith. Betty leaves to mourn her passing: children: Kathy Robison and her husband, Gary of Bertrand, NE., Weston Holen and his wife, Christa of Oxford, NE., Marcy Lucas and her husband, John of Cozad, NE. and Tami Sauter and her husband, Matthew of Highlands Ranch, CO.; grandchildren: Chad Robison; Joey Robison and his wife, Lindsey, Kristy Hock and her husband, Nick, Blake Holen, Joy Solomon and her husband, Bryan, Heather Brennan and her husband, James, Linda Brown and her husband, Scott, Tom Lucas and his wife, Kimberly, Mikaela Sauter, Bridgette Sauter and Eden Sauter; great-grandchildren: Reyclyn Robison, Ryan Robison, Adlea Hock, Shevin and Kaisha Solomon, Anna, Blair and Riley Brennan, Ian and Owen Brown and Henry Lucas; sister, Donna Holmquist and her husband, Bruce of Omaha, NE. and a host of relatives and friends. Interment was in The Sandstrom Cemetery, Phelps County, NE. Published in Kearney Hub from February 18 to February 19, 2013
