Betty was born June 11, 1923, in Tower Hill, Illinois, to Harry and Hazel (Neil) McKittrick. She grew up and graduated high school in Charleston, Illinois. She married Albert H. Steel on March 21, 1944, in Fremont, NE. During World War II, Betty worked as a Rosie Riveter in the war effort in Los Angeles, California. Steel, 89, of Fremont, Nebraska, died Thursday, April 18, 2013, at Methodist Hospital in Omaha, NE. Betty was born June 11, 1923, in Tower Hill, Illinois, to Harry and Hazel (Neil) McKittrick. She grew up and graduated high school in Charleston, Illinois. She married Albert H. Steel on March 21, 1944, in Fremont, NE. During World War II, Betty worked as a Rosie Riveter in the war effort in Los Angeles, California. After Albert was honorably discharged from the Army, they moved to Tule Lake, California. Betty moved back to Fremont in 1949. She worked as a housekeeper and also at Hammond - Stevens beginning in 1968. Albert died March 26, 1996. Betty was a member of the Fremont Alliance Church in Fremont, NE. She had a heart for missions, especially for the country of Indonesia. She enjoyed spending time with her prayer partner, Joyce Ellis. She is survived by her daughter, Karon (Thomas) Bisbee of Wilcox, NE; sons, Douglas (Joyce) Steel of Anchorage, Alaska, and The Rev. Larry (Phyllis) Steel of Fremont, NE; 11 grandchildren, 23 great grandchildren, and 10 step great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Albert; son, Kenneth Steel; infant sister, Doris McKittrick; brother and sister in law, Edwin (Opal) McKittrick. The funeral will be 10:30 AM, Tuesday, April 23, 2013, at the Fremont Alliance Church in Fremont, NE, with The Rev. Tom Nevius and The Rev. Elmer Murdoch officiating. Visitation with family receiving friends Monday, from 5 - 8 PM, with the family receiving friends at Moser Memorial Chapel in Fremont. Visitation will continue one hour prior to the service at the church on Tuesday. The burial will be at Ridge Cemetery, Fremont, NE. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Fremont Alliance Church Front Door Fund.
