Born Dec. 7, 1925, in rural Dorchester, she was the daughter of Edward C. and Petra Clauson Quandahl. On March 22, 1947, she married Orville John Somermeyer in Waterloo. Mrs. Somermeyer taught school 33 years in the Mount Pleasant School District, retiring in 1988. Read More	Betty Somermeyer Betty Mae Somermeyer, 83, of Mount Pleasant died Friday, May 15, 2009, at Park Place Long Term Care Unit in Mount Pleasant. Born Dec. 7, 1925, in rural Dorchester, she was the daughter of Edward C. and Petra Clauson Quandahl. On March 22, 1947, she married Orville John Somermeyer in Waterloo. Mrs. Somermeyer taught school 33 years in the Mount Pleasant School District, retiring in 1988. She graduated from Waukon High School and earned a bachelor's degree at Iowa Wesleyan College in Mount Pleasant. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church, United Presbyterian Women, Iowa Retired School Personnel Association and past president of both Delta Kappa Gamma and Henry County Retired School Personnel. She was active in American Legion Auxiliary. She enjoyed playing bridge, exercising, traveling and reading. Survivors include one son, Ron Somermeyer of Madison, Wis.; two daughters, Ann Corrigan of Mount Pleasant and Karen Peterson of Madison, Wis.; six grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and one sister, Ella Henderson of Geneva, Ill. She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, three brothers and one sister. Visitation will be from noon to 7 p.m. Wednesday at Olson-Powell Memorial Chapel in Mount Pleasant, where the family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. The funeral for Mrs. Somermeyer will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at First Presbyterian Church in Mount Pleasant, with the Rev. Roger Ricketts officiating. Burial will be in Forest Home Cemetery in Mount Pleasant. Memorials have been established for First Presbyterian Church and Park Place Long Term Care Unit.
