Description	:	Betty VanderPoel, age 87, of Irene, South Dakota, passed away on Sunday, September 11, 2016 at Avera Sacred Heart Hospital in Yankton, South Dakota. She was born April 11, 1929 in Yankton, South Dakota to Lars and Mabel (Jorgensen) Rudd. Betty grew up in Yankton and attended grade school there until her mother Mabel married Albert Johnson. Read More	Betty VanderPoel, age 87, of Irene, South Dakota, passed away on Sunday, September 11, 2016 at Avera Sacred Heart Hospital in Yankton, South Dakota. She was born April 11, 1929 in Yankton, South Dakota to Lars and Mabel (Jorgensen) Rudd. Betty grew up in Yankton and attended grade school there until her mother Mabel married Albert Johnson. After the marriage, the family moved to the farm near Irene where she attended rural school. Betty briefly attended Irene High School choosing to work at the Human Services Center in Yankton instead. A couple years later, Betty moved to Sioux Falls to work at the Manchester Biscuit Company. While living in Sioux Falls, she met and fell in love with Peter Vander Poel. They were married on February 18, 1950. Thereafter, Pete and Betty lived and farmed near Edgerton, Minnesota until 1954 when they moved to the farm west of Irene. Even though she was a city slicker, Betty loved the farm and was very active in all aspects of farm life. Betty was a great cook and was known for her delicious pies. She loved playing cards with friends, going to the casino (spending her $20), shopping, reading and going to auction sales. Later in life, Betty loved watching political programs and enjoyed helping on the election board. She greatly enjoyed traveling with her family especially the trips to Italy, Germany, Ireland and Hawaii. Betty loved her grandson, Clint, and treasured the time she was able to spend with him. Betty is survived by: five children, Larry (Deb) VanderPoel, Vicky Nickel (Kurt Whaley), Jeanie (Bob) Zavadil, Gail Durnin,and Jim VanderPoel; sister, Ruth Hanisch; half-sister, Karen Domogalski; half-brother, Kenny Johnson; and many nieces and nephews. Betty was preceded in death by: her parents; step-father, Albert Johnson; husband, Peter VanderPoel on July 23, 2004; grandson, Clint VanderPoel; brother, Bobby R. "Jack" and wife Virginia "Tootie" Rudd; sister, Norma and husband Mervin Eide; brothers-in-law, Robert Hanisch and Ward Domogalski. Funeral services on Thursday, September 15, 2016 at the Wintz & Ray Funeral Home in Yankton. Burial will be in the Garden of Memories Cemetery in Yankton.
