Description	:	Betty Sue Halferty, age 72, died September 28, 2013 at home. Sue, as she was known, began working at Bankers Life Company. She later worked at Cassaday Refrigeration Company in the sales and marketing division. She started selling real estate in 1979 for Reel & Associates Realty in Des Moines. In 1985, she was recruited by Ira Hockenberg of Hockenberg Equipment Company for his company. Later she purchased the business and became the first woman owner in the industry. In 1985, she was recruited by Ira Hockenberg of Hockenberg Equipment Company for his company. Later she purchased the business and became the first woman owner in the industry. Some of her projects included, Premium Standard Farms's restaurant, Princeton Power, in Princeton, Missouri, where she designed the entire restaurant for the building. She also designed the Veterans Auditorium snack bar, receiving an industry award after she vented the popcorn machine to the entire building. The Blank Park Zoo snack shop and Jessie's Ember's restaurant were both projects of hers. In 2001, she sold the business but continued to work there until retirement in 2006.Husband, Larry, died in 2012. Survivors include her children, Suzy Shurts of Perry, Brian Shurts of Des Moines, Cinda Salinas (Ray) of Rockwall, Texas, and Monte Halferty of Des Moines; grandchildren, Aubyrne Shurts, Zachary, Lindsey, and Jake Salinas; sisters, Barb Campbell of Leon, Pat Smiser (Ed) of Kirksville, Missouri, and Kay Garton (Dale) of Leon; and other relatives and friends.Memorial services will be at the Loving Chapel United Methodist Church in Leon at 10 a.m. Saturday, October 5. Sue and Larry's cremains will be interred at the Cambria Cemetery in Wayne County
