Read More	Burned Twisted Hay For 15 Years Date: November 18, 1929 Mrs. D B Hollingsworth came to Lake county in the spring of 1874, and lays claim to having lived longer in the county than any other woman. Mr. Hollingsworth had been out the year before, filed on the claim and built a small house, 10 by 12 feet, made by standing boards on end. The bed was made of some poles cut near the lake and bed cords stretched across them. They had one little table and few dishes. They borrowed two chairs at first till they bought some at a sale later. The homestead was one and one half miles northeast of the present Chautauqua grounds on the shores of Lake Madison. Mr. Hollingsworth was a farmer from the first. The first year they raised three acres of crop and the second year they had five acres, which the grasshoppers ate up. He then made a living breaking small plots for the newcomers, who were required to break some on their homesteads in order to hold them. They had all the fish they wanted from the lake. Mrs. Hollingsworth tells one story about a neighbor, Wes Brown, who was a tall man. At spawning time, the fish crowded up to the lakeshore very thick. Mr Brown said he would get a big one. He quietly waded in almost waist deep and got his arms around a large one weighing about forty pounds. When he lifted it from the water, it dropped loose from him making a great splash that frightened the fish and they all made a rush for deep water. There were so many large fish that they knocked Mr Brown down and he nearly drowned before the fish stampede was past. They could catch all the buffalo fish they wanted by spearing any time and they could catch pickerel most any time. They were all large ones weighing six pounds or more. Sometimes they baited the hook with a piece of red flannel rag. Mr. Hollingsworth said that there were times when the large fish would bite so fast that one could catch a boatload in a very short time. The lake was literally full with the fish and they were hungry. Mrs. Hollingsworth gardened and raised chickens. There were a few wild plums and gooseberries. Wild geese and brants nested about the lake and were so thick that they actually pulled grain from the grain stacks and ate off the heads. Mr. Hollingsworth traded four bushels of oats for their first hog. It was a large hog but had been trying to live on hay and was so poor he had to hold it up so it could eat at first. They were very poor for a long time. Mrs. Hollingsworth says she burned twisted hay for fifteen years, as they did not have much wood on their homestead. Mr. Hollingsworth had to wait for a long time once to write a letter he wished to mail because he did not have the three cents it took in those times to buy a postage stamp. Nevertheless, they have no mortgage on their homestead. The patent is recorded and that is all the entry that has ever been made with reference to that piece of land. How many other pieces are like that in South Dakota? Mr. and Mrs. Hollingsworth lived on the homestead for 47 years and the eight children were all born there. Another remarkable fact is that the entire large family still lives in Lake County. Mrs. Lodusky Townswick, Edward, Mrs. Myrtle Wingert, Mrs. Ethel Wingert and Miss May Hollingsworth all get their mail at Madison. Mrs. Nora Nicolson and Ira live at Wentworth and Mrs. Nina Olson lives at Ramona. Mrs. Hollingsworth is a Methodist, Mr Hollingsworth is a Mason and they vote the Republican ticket. All the people in Lake County attended church at one time and one place, once. Mrs. Hollingsworth's father in law was a Baptist preacher and he rode a visit to the new country. Church service was announced in William Lee's grove and the entire population of seven families was there. There were never any prairie dogs in Lake County and Mrs. Hollingsworth says she never saw any rattlesnakes or bull snakes. Mr. Hollingsworth is 81 and still gets out to the farm to do some work he thinks needs doing. Her children are listed as Edward E Hollingsworth (age 32), Myrtle Hollingsworth (age 23), Mary Hollingsworth (age 20), Ethel Hollingsworth (age 15), May Hollingsworth (age 8). Her father, George Thompson (age 93), is also living in the household. 1920 United States Federal Census shows Beulah Hollingsworth as age 65 living in Lake View, Lake, South Dakota.
