A native of Manchester, he was born August 24, 1873, a son of the late John Sherwood and Ellen Coates Cheney. He was graduated from Hartford Public High School in 1892. Cheney was chief military aide to President Coolidge and served 40 years in the Army. A native of Manchester, he was born August 24, 1873, a son of the late John Sherwood and Ellen Coates Cheney. He was graduated from Hartford Public High School in 1892. He entered Yale University and later transferred to the United States Military Academy at West Point. He was graduated as adjutant of his class with the highest rating as an engineer in 1897. He served under fire as a second lieutenant in 1898 with Company C, Battalion of Engineers, in the Spanish American War. The following year as a first lieutenant, he was assistant to the Engineer Officer of the Eighth Army Corps during the operations in the Cavite Province. Later he was named Engineer Officer of the Department of Southern Luzon. He returned to this country in December, 1901, and while serving as aide de camp to Major General J.C. Bates in Chicago and St. Louis, he was appointed captain. From 1907 until 1911, he served on the general staff as a major. He had charge of the Third San Francisco River and Harbor District and was made secretary of the California Debris Commission. He next became director of the Army Field Engineering School at Fort Leavenworth until 1906, after which has was sent to the Mexican Border. In 1918, with the rank of colonel, he was placed in command of the 110th Regiment of Engineers in France. In that country he was also director general of Army Transportation until 1919 and a member of the Inter-Allied Military Mission to the Baltic States. He served in the Baltic States and Germany as a member of the General Staff Corps. Having been awarded the Distinguished Service Medal by the United States and the Croix de Guerre and Legion of Honor decoration by France, he was withdrawn from Europe in 1921. There followed a period of service as military attache to China. But in 1925 he was called to the Whire House as chief military aide to President Coolidge. He remained at that post for two years, before being transferred at his own request to Boston where he had charge of the Corps of Engineers for five years. In the spring of 1933, while he was in command of Fort Logan, his appointment to the permanent rank of brigadier general was confirmed by Congress. Soon Afterwards he was transferred to San Franciso to take charge of the Ninth Coast Artillery District. There he remained until his retirement in 1937, after 40 years of service. General Cheney's first wife, Louise Delano, died while he was serving in China. She was the cousin of Theodore and Franklin Roosevelt. He leaves his wife, Charlotte Hopkins Cheney of Bangor, Maine; a daughter, Miss Matilda Delano Cheney; two sisters, Mrs. Clifford D. Cheney and Miss Emily Grace Cheney of Manchester; and a sister-in-law, Mrs. William C. Cheney.
