He joined the Marines in 1954 and served in Japan as a radar tech and was graduated as an electrical engineer at Iowa State University in the beginning of a golden age of electrical engineering. He was always an inventor in the fields of electronics, optics and lasers. He was one of three individuals who designed the first laser guided munitions. His many interests included running, boating, diving, cruising, building airplanes and flying aerobatics. Survived by loving companion, Mary Haggar; daughters, Cathy McComb (Scott), Saudi Arabia and Susan Kerby (Charles) of North Carolina; sons, Barry of Tennessee and David of Tennessee; and stepchildren Becky Rice of Washington, Vicky Rice of Washington, Dr. Allan Haggar of Illinois and JanMarie Muhanna in Beirut, Lebanon. Survivors also include grandchildren, Lt. Ben McComb, U.S. Air Force, Emily Kerby BSRN, Eric McComb and Adam McComb at U of AK, Patrick McComb, Katie Darling and Will Darling; sisters, Judy Duden of Missouri and Roxanna Tovrea (Andy) of Lakeland. Bill fought prostate cancer with wide spread metastases for over sixteen years and led support groups giving men encouragement to be positive and keep fighting for information of new drugs, protocols, and oncologists with special interest in prostate cancer. He was predeceased by infant son, Ben. A Celebration of his Life was held in late Aug. 2012, which was always Bill's wish. He did not want to miss a good party. Family requests any memorials go to Suncoast Hospice Foundation, 5771 Roosevelt Blvd, Clearwater, FL 33760-9962. Burial in Corydon, IA. Published in the Tampa Bay Times on Sept. 23, 2012
