Bill is preceded in death by son William Bradley Hacker; siblings: Lola Jean Ingle of Drumright, Oklahoma, Lavota Loper of Wichita, Kansas, and Aldean Mark, Lucille Seifert, and George (Clifford) Hacker of Harper, Kansas. Bill’s older brother, Verl Hacker, was killed in action in World War II and is buried in Florence, Italy. Bill was born December 8, 1934, in Harper, Kansas to George Hacker and Goldie Coffey. Bill spent nearly his entire life in the City of Harper. He was a 1953 graduate of Harper High School. After high school, he attended Hutchinson Junior College. He also served in the National Guard until 1962, making frequent trips to Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri for training. He started to work at Boeing in Wichita, Kan., and after the birth of their son Brad, Bill and Ruthann moved to Roswell, New Mexico where Bill continued to work at Boeing. In 1962, they returned to Harper and Bill continued to work at Boeing in Wichita. In June 1971, Bill became the Water Superintendent, starting a long career working for the City of Harper. Following the resignation of City Clerk Bob Henderson, Bill was appointed to City Clerk of Harper on February 1, 1972. Throughout most of his career as City Clerk, Bill was a member of the South Central Kansas Economic Development District where he served as president 1983-1984. Bill served the City of Harper in many other roles. He was a volunteer firefighter for 25 years, a municipal judge for nine years, and a member of the Harper Recreation Commission for nine years. Bill retired from the city in 1999. He was an active member of the Harper Masonic Lodge for many years where he discovered his hidden talent for making funnel cakes. Passionate about sports, Bill started announcing games for the Harper Bearcats in 1964, and after Chaparral High School was built, he became the Voice of the Roadrunners. Bill coached Senior Babe Ruth Baseball, fast pitch softball teams, and summer league softball teams. He started to coach the softball team at Chaparral in 2000. Some referred to Bill as the Roadrunners #1 Fan because he never missed a home or away game. Bill continued to be active in his retirement as a bus driver by driving daily routes for the high school and the junior high. In addition, he drove to numerous school activity trips, which allowed him to continue to cheer on the Roadrunners. Bill finally retired completely in 201l. Cremation has taken place. Friends may register from 9:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Thursday at the funeral home. Memorial Service is at 10:30 a.m. Friday, November 10, 2017 at Prairie Rose Funeral Home in Harper. Private family inurnment will take place at a later time. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to Big Blue Backers and may be sent in care of the funeral home.
