He was born in Billings, MT on January 28th, 1925 to William Walter Dugan and Velma Josephine (Montgomery) Dugan. He was born in Billings, MT on January 28th, 1925 to William Walter Dugan and Velma Josephine (Montgomery) Dugan. His father was born in Ireland and came to America at 7 years old, thus Bill had a very proud Irish heritage. Bill's Grandmother Ella Montgomery Gray raised him after the unexpected death of his father at 8 years old. Bill attended and graduated from Billings Senior High in 1944. During his junior and senior years he was involved with the only certified Airframe and Power Plant program in the country where he developed his love for airplanes and began training with Northwest Airlines. Bill enlisted in the Navy at age 18 during WWII, following his service with the Navy Bill served in the Army at the age of 25 during the Korean War. Bill received the Army Occupation Medal, Japan; United Nations Service Medal; and the Korean Service Medal with one Bronze Star. He was employed with Northwest Airlines from October 21st, 1949 until April 30th, 1993. During his time with Northwest Airlines Bill was a Flight Engineer. At the beginning of Bill's career he was based out of Vancouver, WA where he began to help open the Orient by flying to Tokyo, Japan. After his time in Japan Bill was based out of Minneapolis, MN where he flew the continental United States Bill moved back to his hometown in 1962 where he met the mother of his children. From that union he was blessed with four children; Victor, Sherrie, Lora Jean, and Ella. In later years he became Head Crew Chief with Northwest Airlines. Retiring as head Aviation Airframe and Power Plant Crew Chief Mechanic. After 43 years, Bill retired with the highest seniority in Northwest Airlines history. Bill was a lifetime member of the VFW, The American Legion, and The Fraternal Order of the Eagles. He served as the Quarter Master for VFW Post 6774 for a duration of years. He greatly enjoyed spending his time with family and friends, playing cards and Sudoku, riding his bike, taking walks, doodling outside and listening to a wide variety of music. He loved to take road trips, especially when it included stopping for pie, he enjoyed growing flowers, loved animals, he took pleasure in fishing with friends, and he had a lifelong love of airplanes. His favorite past time was spending time at Tiny's Tavern, a home away from home, where he loved watching football, drinking beer and coffee, and hanging with "the crew". Bill was a wonderful Dad, Papa, and friend. He was always willing to lend a helping hand to anyone in need, he loved doing "Daddy Do's" and being a rock for his entire family. He preceded in death by his parents, his siblings, his daughter, Lora Jean, and his son-in-law, Jim Kautz. Services will be held Monday, December 1st, 2014 at 11:00 AM at Smith's Funeral Home on 27th St. Bill will be buried with his father at Mountview Cemetery in Billings, MT with Military Honors.
