Read More	BILLIE MARGUERITE SHINNICK November 22, 1918 ~ March 10, 2011 Billie Marguerite (Doxey Jewell) Shinnick was born November 22, 1918 in Coronation, Canada where her parents, Glen and Ruby Doxey, were homesteading. Her father died the next day from the flu and named the baby girl "Billie" since he had wanted a boy. Billie graduated from high school in Underwood, North Dakota and then went to work for a family in Minneapolis. She cooked, cleaned and looked after the children for two years in order to save enough money to pay for her three-year hospital-nursing course at St. Michael's in Grand Forks, ND. She graduated in 1943 and went to work as a pediatric RN. She once convinced a doctor to reduce a too-large dose of penicillin for a baby by telling him he would have to come in to the hospital to administer it himself. In 1945 she met Raymond Michael Shinnick, an Army veteran who had seen action at Guadalcanal and Bougainville. They married at Our Lady of Perpetual Help in Reynolds, ND where they took up farming and raising a family of five girls. In 1955 they moved the family to Vancouver, WA where Ray bought a share in the Ft. Vancouver Plywood Company and Billie worked part-time as an RN at St. Joseph's Hospital. Billie was an extrovert. With so many activities and friends, it was hard to find her at home. She loved quilting, painting and ceramics and gave many of her creations to family and friends where they adorned beds, walls and coffee tables. She belonged to the Catholic Daughters, St. James Altar Society, Columbia River Old Time Strings, Salmon Creek Grange and Clark County Quilters. She loved singing and playing her guitar and entertaining at nursing homes. She sang with her family and would have her five girls crying with Old Shep and laughing with He's Moving On. Her 13 grandchildren enjoyed her homemade cookies, fried bread and sticky buns. While not as active by the time the 27 great-grandchildren had arrived, she still could play and sing their favorite songs like My Little Rooster and Who Broke the Lock on the Hen House Door. Friday nights at Grandma Billie's was the high point of the week for the Shinnick clan's children especially. The charm, good nature and love of our matriarch will be greatly missed. She is survived by her daughters: Ruth (Leon) Klinginsmith, Mary (Gerry) Parmantier, Susan O'Shea, Carol Davis and Rita Shinnick. She is also survived by 13 grands, 27 great-grands and one great-great-grandchild. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ray; her brothers, Donald Jewell and Duane Jewell; her sisters, Frances Wakefield and Marjorie Hulse; and one grandchild, Sean Stein. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Thursday, March 17, 2011 at St. James Catholic Church, 218 W. 12th Street, Vancouver, WA. The Rosary will precede the Mass and a luncheon will follow in the parish hall. Burial will follow at Mother Joseph Cemetery. Hamilton-Mylan is in charge of the funeral arrangements. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Birthright of Vancouver, 214 East 17th Street, Vancouver, WA 98663-3420.
