He is survived by his wife, Rachel Greene Townsend, three sons, Raymond Townsend of Banner Elk, Robert Townsend and wife Sam of Zionville and Richard Townsend and wife Cynthia of Banner Elk, three grandsons, Michael Townsend, Mark Townsend and wife Natalie and Gavin Proffit, three granddaughters, Allison, Hannah and Megan Townsend, two great granddaughters, Kaelynn and Brynlee Townsend, and one brother, John Townsend of Banner Elk and a number of nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Beulah Gregory and Ada Schreffler, and eight brothers, Melvin, Fred, Vance, Bob, Mack, Ray, Floyd and Glenn Townsend. Funeral services held at Clarks Creek Baptist Church, officiated by Rev. David Lunceford, Rev. Mike Townsend and Rev. Gordon Noble. Burial in the Clarks Creek Baptist Church Cemetery.
