The youths, Dennis Clipperton, 14, son of Mr. and Mrs. Wilbur Clipperton of Bayard, and Billy Betts, 13, son of Mr. and Mrs. Willard Betts of Bayard, were with a group of some 60 children attending a school picnic of Bayard school 7th and 8th graders. They were accompanied by two teachers, Mrs. Richard Manor and Lee Arrowsmlth. Six boys left the picnic group, wandered to a "catch-basin" pond south of the lake and found an old boat. Three of the boys, Dennis, Billy and Joe Doran, got into the boat and pushed it away from shore in 8 or 10 feet of water. Leaky, It started to sink throwing all three Into the water. Dennis, a good swimmer, started to swim to shore but turned back when Billy yelled for help. Both drowned when Dennis grabbed him. Joe, 14, clung to the boat and was rescued. Both bodies were recovered, and officials smashed the boat to prevent a reoccurrence. Supt. Don Tracy of the Bayard school said all youths had been warned not to go swimming or boating. Apparently, this group of boys slipped away from the main group of picnickers shortly after noon. Page 13 Funeral services for Billy Dean Betts, Bayard eighth grade pupil who lost his life in at tragic drowning accident at Springbrook State Park Monday afternoon, were held at the First Christian church here Thursday morning at 10 o clock. Service was in charge of the Rev. Frank Betzer, pastor. Vocal numbers were sung by Mr. and Mrs. Sam Cretsinger with Mrs. Don Ridgeway organist. Casket bearers were Dennis Belts, Roger Stone, Lynn Ford, John Turner, Dean and Jean Cretsinger. Burial was in Coon Rapids cemetery. Billy was born at Carroll June 13, 1945 and lived there with his parents until February of this year when they moved to Bayard. He is survived by his parents. Mr. and Mrs. Willard Belts and four brothers; Daryle of Glidden. Estel of Coon Rapids, Richard of Jefferson and Bobby, his twin, at home.
