Smith, 62, Route 2, Holton, died Wednesday, Dec. 19, at a Topeka hospital. Mr. Smith was a farmer and stockman. He was born March 28, 1922, at Rushville, Mo., the son of Luther and Grace McQueen Smith. He moved to Kansas with his parents when he was 6 weeks old and spent most of his life two miles south of Arrington in Atchison County. He attended Star Grade School south of Arrington and was graduated from Atchison County Community High School at Effingham in 1939. Mr. Smith was a member of the Larkinburg Christian Church and the church board. He was a charter member of Atchison County Livestock Board, a member of the Atchison County Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation Service Board, past president of Larkinburg Telephone Co., past member of Farmers Home Administration, Delaware Grange and Delaware Watershed boards of directors, Independent Order of Odd Fellows at Arrington, and Star and Arrington school boards. He was a member of Loyal Order of the Moose Lodge No. 555 at Topeka and had received the Kansas Soil Conservation Award. He was married to Margaret Deckard March 2, 1942 at Holton. She survives. Other survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Camille Schoettlin, Everest, and Mrs. Patricia Moore, Topeka; a son, Wayne Smith, Holton; a sister, Mrs. Mildred Moore, Muscotah; four brothers, Norman Smith, Holton, Lowell Smith and Noble Smith, both of Muscotah, and Ray Smith, Atchison; 11 grandchildren; seven step-grandchildren; and a great-grandson. Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Nellis-Hagge Funeral Home in Valley Falls. Burial will be in Larkinburg Cemetery. Mr. Smith will lie in state after 7 p.m. today at the funeral home where relatives and friends will meet from 7 until 8:30 p.m. today. Memorial contributions may be made to the Valley Falls Rescue Squad or Larkinburg Christian Church.
