Billy Ray was born June 30, 1936, in Rockingham County, to the late Relus Cornelius Mabe and Doris Calhoun Mabe. He was employed with Beck & Son Ford as a salesman before opening his own business. He owned and operated Mabe’s Exxon for 30 plus years. Earlier in life, Billy Ray enjoyed camping, boating and horseback riding with the family. He also loved mowing and keeping his yard in order. Billy Ray was born June 30, 1936, in Rockingham County, to the late Relus Cornelius Mabe and Doris Calhoun Mabe. He was employed with Beck & Son Ford as a salesman before opening his own business. He owned and operated Mabe’s Exxon for 30 plus years. Earlier in life, Billy Ray enjoyed camping, boating and horseback riding with the family. He also loved mowing and keeping his yard in order. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Peggy Boles Mabe (June 21, 2017); sister Frances M. Tilley and brothers-in-law Hassel Tilley and Donnie Clark. Survivors include his son, Billy Ray Mabe, Jr.; daughters, Theresa Smith (Ronnie), Rhonda Smith and Christy Gann (Tyler); sisters, Shirley Gourley and Linda Clark; grandchildren Jimmy Van Thomas, Jr. (Robyn), Billy Smith (Tina) and Chancy Murray; great-grandchildren, Logan T. Gentry (Warren) and Blake Thomas (Cheyenne), Tristan Murray, Nevaeh Murray, Jessica Adkins, Colton Gann, Wyatt Gann and Hartleigh Mabe; and one great-great-grandchild. Billy Ray will lie in state from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Friday at Colonial Funeral Home. A graveside service will be held at 4 pm, Friday, July 3, 2020, at Ellisboro Baptist Church Cemetery with Reverend Rudy Woods and Reverend Randy Jessup officiating. Recommended social distancing guidelines will be observed and face mask or face covering is recommended. Memorials may be made to Hospice of Rockingham County, P.O.281, Wentworth, NC 27375. Colonial Funeral Home in Madison is serving the family.
